Year 9 boys Rhys Barrow and Daniel Gibbons were two of a number of boys who attended an excursion to Christian Brothers’ High School at Lewisham. The day was aimed at cooperation, collaboration and, creative and critical thinking. The boys worked in groups with students from other schools to complete challenges from different categories. Daniel worked in Philosphy and Rhys in French.

Last Sunday Year 9 organised the readings, offertory and mass booklets at our Sunday night mass.

This morning at assembly the captains of the pennant winning team for the winter sport season of 2016 were presented.

On stage from Year 9 were: Nick Chan, Dempsey Gascoigne, Alex Sutton, Cian McCann, Nick Ryan and Ben Tuite.

Year 9 were asked to make a model of the human hand during Science week. These are the two groups who were most successful in their design.

On the 11^th of August 2016, ten boys from Year 9 and 10 travelled to St Patrick’s College  in Strathfield, to attend their annual Philosophy Day. The day began with a lecture from Professor Kerry Sanders, where she discussed with us aspects of Jurisprudence, also known as the Philosophy of Law. After a quick recess, we split up into smaller groups and moved to our second session, Circles of Inquiry. The four groups each discussed a different topic ranging from “Justice”, “What to do with an Idea”, “Free will v Determinism” and finally “Free will and the Law.” All of these discussions were very beneficial and we were really able to express our opinions and develop our ideas in smaller groups. Our final session was an Ethical discussion. It was focused on a political scandal, with layers being added to the scenario as the discussion progressed. Each new layer questioned our judgments and forced us to think and question at a deeper level.

It was a worthwhile, interesting and thought-provoking day.

Below are the latest exclusive pictures from the set of the upcoming film from Year 9 French. I’m not sure of the exact plot but the gymnasium mats for the “stunts” got me a bit worried….

This morning the entire school participated in National Reading Hour. This is an annual event highlighting the importance and joy of reading for all ages. Year 9 spent Period 1 reading a book of their choice.

Year 9, 10 and 11 Indigenous students from Joeys attended AIME (Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience) day at the University of Sydney last Friday 12th August.

The Year 9 sessions consisted of ‘Aboriginal Art – connecting with Culture’, ‘Guest Speakers who are making a difference –e.g. Social Worker and Marathon Runner Nathan Riley’. As well as the Olympic “aimes” where a large group of our boys won medals.

A very big thank you to all the Year 9 Parent Representatives who provided such a fantastic feed to the boys on Friday at lunch time. So many of the boys commented on how good the food was and there was so much of it that there was plenty left over. Thank you to all the parents who assisted on behalf of all of Year 9.

Year 9 have been so focussed and disciplined in the studio with their painting practice. Look at the incredible work they are producing. All can be viewed in the Student Art Exhibition, Opening Friday 12th August, 6.30pm in the Farrell Auditorium, to be opened by Luise Guest, Director of Education and Research, White Rabbit Collection.
