Colo Leadership Student Reflections

Colo Reflection 1

For starters, I was chosen to do a leadership camp for Colo to help out the teachers and organise the year 7 and 8 year groups. The camp of 24 boys headed down to Colo to start a three-day camp from Sunday to Tuesday have long hard days to ahead of us.

Sunday-
We arrived at Colo around 10 o’clock and had a brief meeting with the four teachers to talk about what we are going to do today. We split up into 2 groups and we had to stick with that group for the day. My group did the rock climbing first. Having done rock climbing before I have had experience, so the debrief was simple but we had to do a few extras and the important parts like belaying the ropes so the debrief on that was intense but all the boys got through and did it with flying colours. The course was 25 metres long and not too hard but interesting. After that we met back up with the groups and then my group went out to the bus and off to the colo river to kayak down for 2 hours. This was a great time with everyone, we learnt a lot of risks in the water and what to do if our boat got tipped and how to manage and overcome that problem. We then went back to the camp and had dinner with the boys and teachers. After that we had a meeting with Mr Brackenreg about what the next two days will be like. Then it was silence.

Monday-
Waking up 6:45 am for a long day ahead of activities and meetings. The first thing we did for the day was have a chat about the risk and how to manage them at Colo; that went on for about an hour and a half. Then we had breakfast with everyone. The we had a study session with an exam about the ropes course. After that lunch was ready to eat, further gathering for another study sessions with Mr Brackenreg and the others. That then concluded to dinner.

Colo Reflection 2

The year 11 leadership camp was a very different experience to the usual Colo camps in yr 7-9. The year 11 camp was centred around the different types of leadership present in the world today both good and bad so that we can learn ourselves ways to become good leaders. This is so that when we go back to be a year 11 leader at a year 7 or 8 camp, we can be good leaders and assist the Colo staff.

The year 11 camp was a 3 day camp in which we did a lot of activities and work. Although we did not have much free time, it was good being with our mates in the Colo environment and it was different as we were given much more responsibilities and trust. The camp was to also to complete some parts of our Cert II in Outdoor recreation in which I and many of the boys are doing. This is a Tafe course that was available for the year 11 leader boys that is supplied by Colo.

I look forward to going back to Colo to be a year 11 leader for year 7 or 8 as do many of the boys.
