Gaming – Fortnite

Below is a link to an 8 minute video which provides some pretty good information of the game Fornite. It is presented by Dr. Michael Carr-Gregg and outlines some handy information for parents and some useful tips on managing your child’s time playing Fortnite. I really encourage you to spend the time watching this.

This coincides with the 60 Minutes presentation last Sunday, however, this program is a little more information based providing details on the specifics of the game and how to manage it.

Laptop Code of Conduct

Peter and I met with the boys on Tuesday and reminded them of a few simple messages relating to the use of their laptops. These messages are below. it would be great if you could discuss this with your son.

1. Care of My Laptop

a) I have been provided with a plastic casing for my laptop and I must not remove this casing as it protects the laptop.

b) I need to look after and care for all equipment that I have been given with my laptop. This includes the school-supplied laptop bag, laptop itself and the cords that come with it.

c) My school-supplied laptop bag comes with a name tag. I must not remove this tag. If it comes off, I must report to ICT and order a new one.

d) I must not put stickers anywhere on my laptop, nor should I place anything between my laptop and the plastic cover.

e) If my laptop is damaged, I must report this damage to the ICT Helpdesk immediately – no matter how small the damage is.

f) All support for my laptop must be given by the College ICT Helpdesk. I am never to take the computer to an Apple Store or have any third party work on it.

g) At no stage will I install additional software on my laptop. If there is software that I feel I need to install on my computer I will speak to staff at the ICT Helpdesk who will speak with relevant staff and make a decision about this. I will respect the final decision made in this circumstance.

2. Playing Games

a) At times, my teacher will provide me with details or links to academic games. When given permission by my teacher, I am allowed to play these games.

b) I may only play recreational games during my free time in the dorms or in a place designated to do so. I must never play games in the Resources Centre as it should always be a learning environment.

c) I may play games that run from an external storage device (USB hard drive, thumb drive etc.).

d) I must never install games on my laptop.

e) I may only play games that are suitable for my age group. I must abide by government classification recommendations.

Gaming

I recently posted some information about gaming and the potential impacts of this on young men. In Year 7, the team are taking a bit of a stance here to try and limit the boys exposure to computer games, namely Fortnite. Fortnite is a very popular game and also an addictive on but like most things if managed in moderation it can be ok. The boarders now have limited access to their laptops over the weekends as these are collected on both Friday and Saturday nights. We are also asking the boys to get off their laptops in the dorms by 8.30pm. This is to ensure that they are having one hour without technological equipment before they go to bed (also published earlier). The aim here is to ensure the boys get a solid and unbroken nights sleep (information on this can be found in the earlier post titled the Benefits of Sleep).

On the news over the weekend, the were a number of segments focusing on Fortnite and what parents can do to limit their child’s exposure to the game. Being available in app form and also on PC it makes game incredibly accessible. One such segment referred to cyber safety platforms and internet filters with a particular focus on one called Family Zone https://www.familyzone.com/au/ Family Zone runs via the cloud which means you can block your sons access to the game even on their phone. Other examples to look at Net Nanny and Qustodio. Below is an article on Fortnite that I think you might find useful.

Upcoming Assessement Tasks

With a number of assessment tasks due over the next two weeks it might be worthwhile touching base with your son and checking his progress on these tasks. Below are the assessment tasks for the term for Year 7.

The Benefits of Sleep

A fortnight ago, I published some information on the Year 7 Blog about the benefits of sleep. We also focused on this in our year meeting and pastoral care lessons. Below is a link to a number of good resources that I think are very important for us to discuss with our young men. I will be passing this onto the pastoral care teachers and would really appreciate if you could support this by discussing some of the topics or watching some of the short video clips with your son.

Trial Boarding

Dear Parents of Year 7 Day Students,

You may already be aware of the availability of the trial boarding program for Day Students here at Joeys and quite a number of boys have already taken it up with more already booked in. However being the start of Semester 2 I thought it might be a good idea to remind you in case you are interested in a trial during Terms 3 or 4.

Current day students that would like to experience boarding life at the College are able to do so for 3 weeks, free of boarding fees. During this time the boy and his family will be able to assess if boarding is the right option for them.

Full details are available on the College website here: http://www.joeys.org/boarding/trial-boarding/ or let me know if you have any questions. To apply, please email the Head of Boarding, Mr John Reading: jreading@joeys.org.

Winter Sports Rally

Just a last minute reminder about this event.

Starts at 6.30pm and finishes at 7.30pm. Dress is Full Blues.

It is recommended that the boys shower and get changed here after the Rugby vs Riverview but you do have the option to take your son home after the First XV and return him prior to the 6.30pm start time.

Just a reminder that the Winter Sports Rally is a compulsory event.
