Month: February 2020
FAREWELL CHRIS AND JAMES.
This week we will say farewell to our two Irish Exchange Students from Glenstall Abbey, Chris Burke Young and James Devine. It has been an absolute pleasure having them both in the Year group, we wish them well in their future education and endeavors and it was a tremendous laugh having a Q and A session with our deputy Headmaster, Mick Blake at yesterday’s Assembly.
MEETING A NEED – A BRAVE EFFORT
Last Sunday four of our boys, Atticus Heaven, Finn Graham, Archie Campbell and Harry Moxham were at Newport beach training with their Lindfield U/16 Rugby side. Also at the beach was the Lindfield U/10 side. At the conclusion of training, the U/10 boys went in for a surf and a few of them ended up being taken out in a rip. Seeing their sons in danger two of the fathers of the U/10 boys went into save them and also ended up in trouble. On seeing the dangerous situation which had arisen, Atticus, Finn, Archie and Harry went in and brought their younger mates as well as the fathers into safety. Archie in particular had to calm down and passify one of the fathers who was in distress and needed medical assistance once the boys returned him to shore. A very brave and selfless effort by all four boys and they were rightly honoured and applauded at today’s Headmaster’s Assembly.
ROAD SAFETY PRESENTATION – “YOU CHOOSE”.
On Wednesday the boys with Yr.11 listened to a very raw and powerful Road Safety Presentation from Melissa McGuinness. It was a wonderful presentation with many messages for the boys. What also impressed was the spontaneous and genuine standing ovation both Year groups gave to Melissa as she concluded and then the very manly and respectful manner in which every boy, in both Year groups waited behind to show her their appreciation for what she had laid open for them. Following is an account from one of our boys –
During period two on Wednesday we had a special guest Melissa McGuinness come in and talk to Years 10 and 11 about road safety and her experience in losing her 18 year old son, Jordan McGuinness, in a car accident in 2012. Melissa gave a very emotional but serious lesson on the importance oF road safety and the consequence of reckless driving while under the influence of drugs and alcohol. During our experience at Joeys we have had countless talks relating to a number of serious topics, but nothing has touched our heart in such an emotional way that could bring a tear to our eyes. To hear Melissa’s’ story about her family’s grief and pain through such an unbearable time, showed us boys a sense of reality in choosing the right choice. This experience sure opened our eyes and proved that what decisions we make as young adults can affect our lives, family, friends and normal people. I am one hundred percent sure that every boy in that hall during period two learned something so valuable that they will remember so clearly throughout their lives when it comes to making that decision that they will choose the right one. FROM OUR COUNSELLORS – Parent Wellbeing Seminar #1
There were 224 parents in attendance at the first of our Parent Seminar Series ‘Helping Your Son Become Confident and Capable in Their Schooling’ last Wednesday evening. Dr Judith Locke spoke about the importance of parents identifying when they are enabling their sons and the negative impact this can have on their son growing to be an independent and resilient person. Dr Locke spoke about areas of school work, chores and conversation making. You can find further information and a newsletter Dr Locke has written for our community in the documents attached.
TUESDAY NIGHT.
I am sure by now you would have heard about the tree coming down on-top of our Dorms on Tuesday evening. I stood upstairs in the foyer of the dorms watching it for I thought it may happen as the wind and rain was so strong and the amount of rain we have had made the ground very soft. Sure enough when it did come down, a number of boys were watching too.
However what happened next was really impressive. The mature, calm and common sense manner in which the boys, in the effected dorms, took their mattresses and moved into other dorms to sleep for the night. Getting on with things, calmly and maturely, in emergency situations is part of the culture here, especially in the senior years and the boarders certainly displayed this on Tuesday evening. Well done to them all.

WELCOME IRISH EXCHANGE STUDENTS!
This week we were delighted to welcome Christopher Bourke Young and James Devine from Glenstall Abbey, Ireland. The boys are here with us for one month and have fitted into the Year group very easily. If any of our families are able to welcome the boys into your home for an overnight over the next month, that would be a fantastic help and certainly would add to the boys’ Australian experience. Please simply email me if you are able to do so.
