Division Meeting Week 2

by | 4 February

Each week Year 10 have a “Division Meeting” which covers organisational matters and a variety of different topics important for the Year group.

This week the Year 10 Academic Coordinator, Dr Mark Fenech, spoke to the boys about some easy and practical strategies for long term academic success. Evening study supervisors have been reinforcing these with the boys this week and it has been great to see many boys implementing these already at night. I have included a summary below so you can reinforce with your sons.

Subject specific literacy

Each subject has its own ‘language’. Boys are encouraged to write important subject specific terms at the bottom of each page of their various subject workbooks. This is good to do either while completing set homework or afterwards once set work is completed.

Review HSC marking guidelines

Marking guidelines are available on the NESA website. Boys should review these to start getting a feeling for what the difference between a satisfactory or standard answer is, and a good or excellent answer.

Exam performance

One way to improve exam performance is to practice being able to get focussed and start work without wasting a single minute. Boys are encouraged to practice this each time they sit down to study. Have their books out ready to go and practice sitting down and starting work straight away.

Averages

Dr Fenech spoke about averages and explained some basics about how scaling in the HSC works. The HSC is still a while away but the point was that individual results are affected by the group’s results when it comes to adjusting assessment marks between schools. The better Year 10 can work together as a group, the better off everyone will be.
