Joeys Parents and Friends

About Joeys P&F

“One generation plants the trees, and another gets the shade”

Like so many parents before us, in the five generations since Joeys began to educate our sons, the aim of the current  St Joseph’s College Parents and Friends (P&F) is to help create and strengthen friendships within the College community, and to raise funds to assist the College.

The P&F has an executive committee and a number of  sub-committees, made up of  parents who manage P&F activities throughout the year, continuing a long and proud tradition of family involvement at Joeys. With the same spirit with which your sons are asked to contribute once they are part of Joeys, the current P&F welcomes your ideas and energy. Joeys families are renowned for their friendliness and spirit with which they volunteer, believing “the best place to find a helping hand is at the end of your own arm”.

Parent Reps

Each year, parents step forward to support their son’s year and to coordinate activities  for fellow parents. In 2011, each year group is represented by a broad  range of parents – country and city – all working to connect you with each other. Look out fot the functions they are organising on the “Dates for your Diary” page.

College Canteens

The canteens (Main Park & Tennis), which operate during summer and winter sports, and are entirely run and operated by past and present parents. Over the years they have become very special – we have an expresso machine in the Tennis Cafe and the Main Park can serve over 10 000 people on our big rugby days. We ask that you are generous in volunteering your assistance. The Crows Feet Cafe provides much appreciated egg and bacon rolls (which are known to be the best in the GPS) and is entirely operated by fathers whose sons left the College years ago. Look out for them on the basketball courts in summer, and more importantly, on the ABC oval in winter, where they cook up a storm to the musical hits of “whenever”.

Joeys Rowing

The St Joseph’s College Rowing Club conducts a BBQ, which operates during home matches at the Park. Parents of rowers operate this canteen, and are masters of the sausage, steak, egg and onion roll.  Spring fair 088

Mothers and Friends

A treasured branch of the P&F is the Joeys ‘Mothers and Friends’. This group gathers on the first Tuesday of each term for a meeting followed by lunch where friendships are made and renewed. Guest speakers from within and outside the College address the meeting and it is great place to really get to know what is happening in the life of the College. During Term 4 the group shares a mass and prepares a lunch to farewell and celebrate the contribution of the Year 12 mothers.

Craft@Joeys

Mothers from Joeys also conduct the Craft Group every Thursday during term time. The group meets in the P&F room, located behind the Year 12 Ref. under the college chapel. Participants meet any time from 10.30am until after lunch, and many bring morning tea and lunch for their son/s. The group is not limited to mothers – there are often grandmas, step-mums, guardians, aunts and friends in attendance and new faces are always welcome. Do not stress about your talents – or lack of them.  Craft @ Joeys provides a huge stall at the Spring Fair, but more importantly provides gifts for the boys to purchase for Mother’s Day and ensures they are posted home to distant Mums.

Second Hand Uniform Shop

Many parents donate their son’s uniforms when they leave and these can be purchased on Friday afternoons from 3-5pm on the second floor, above the Br Michael Naughtin theatre. Cash or cheque payment only.

Food@Joeys

Parent representatives are invited by the College and Alliance Catering to sit in on meetings each term and to provide a link between the student reps in each year and parents. Boys get to suggest more of what they love and as parents, we are grateful to the College for the opportunity, and for the ever listening ears of Alliance, as they seek to satisfy growing boys in their differing stages and to minimise food wastage.

Major events

The P&F hosts a number of major events each year, culminating with the spectacular Spring Fair and Art Show on the second weekend in November. We also provide support to the Development Office and Foundation when required and assist in the running of the Second hand text book sale on the last day of the school year.
