Accelerated Maths night class
Mr Walker’s accelerated Mathematics class working hard during study last night. The were discussing the surface area and volume of a large ice cream cone.
Bollywood in the Year 9 Ref
Tonight was just another night like every other in the Year 9 ref (despite what your son probably tells you).
A tiger and flamingo watched on as the boys tucked into a Bollywood inspired food under coloured spotlights. The menu included an entree of samosas and two types of curry for mains. Dessert and supper also had an Indian flavour.
Like I said, just another ordinary night in the Year 9 dining room….

The sessions are open to all boys of all years in the college.
Upcoming dates
Please see below some upcoming important dates for Year 9.
Friday 17 June – Dance Practice
There will be a dance practice for all the Year 9 boys in the basketball gym. Practice starts at 8:00am.
Monday 20 June – Dance with OLMC Parramatta
The boys shower after sport training, eat dinner and catch buses to OLMC Parramatta for a dance (dress is greys). Buses will return around 9:00-9:15pm at which time day students can depart immediately.
Thursday 23 June – End of Term 2
The College calendar says that the boys can leave from 5pm. If they do all the right things I am hoping to get them out closer to 4:15pm but that will depend on them! Could you please think twice about requesting that your son leave early next Thursday? There are 163 students, 307 parents and carers and at least 1 staff member who would all like to finish early on Thursday. Barring exceptional circumstances, I think it is fair that we all finish at the same time!
Monday 18 July – Boarders return for Term 2
Boarders return by 8:00pm.
Tuesday 19 July – Classes commence for Term 2
Day students arrive by 8:00am for start of classes.
Canteen roster
Click to sign up – Year 9 Roster for Shore game
Dear Families
Saturday July 23 is OUR YEAR 9 DAY to man the canteens for the Shore Home Game. As an added bonus we are also the Hosts at Jack’s bar after the game :))
It is really important that we get this roster filled because as you may or may not know the canteens are run wholly by parent volunteers.
Please find above the link to the roster.
I know a lot of you will be delaying signing up until you know what time your son/s are playing, but it’s really important we get this roster filled as soon as possible, so please sign up and if there’s a clash, see if you can do a swap with someone on the roster the week before.
Our year 9 parent group is known within the school as being one of the most active and helpful, so let’s keep the spirit going and do our best for a great day.
Looking forward to seeing as many of you in the canteen on the day and at Jack’s bar after the game – look for the number “9” balloon.
Thanks

Feedback from Synapse
The boys reflect on Synapse and the da Vinci decathalon.
The da Vinci Decathlon was a fun and challenging experience for us all. As we stepped through the Knox gates, we were amazed. There was over 1000 students competing at one school! We sat down at the tables in the hall ready for the challenges. The first three challenges we got handed were English, Science and Philosophy. We all worked well as a team as managed to complete these hard tasks relatively well. After recess, we were handed four more challenges. These consisted of Mathematics, Engineering, Art and Poetry and Cartography. These challenges not only required us to use our knowledge but also our creative minds. After lunch, we then did General Knowledge and Code Breaking. We did both these tasks quite well. Overall, this day presented many challenges but was a great experience to be involved in.
Rhys Barrow year 9
i think synapse was challenging this year, though was achievable.
I do think however that the maths section was a bit too tricky.
I would have loved to see the comparison of synapse with DaVinci – i guess I’ll just have to wait until next year and hopefully I’ll get chosen.
Nick Davies Year 9
Synapse was a good challenge, which while a lot of fun, had its harder moments. The best parts were the general knowledge and the art and poetry. The hardest parts were the maths and the engineering. IT was a lot of fun overall and I would like to do it again.

Tomas Fleming
Books & Blokes Breakfast with Tomas Fleming
“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”
Edmund Burke
And so began a very confronting, poignant and moving presentation by Holocaust survivor and Joeys grandfather, Tom Fleming (formerly Fleischmann). It is hard to fathom that this dark part of our history actually occurred and such incredible evil was able to flourish; hearing the stories firsthand from a survivor was a powerful and overwhelming experience.
Tomas began his story with the family’s capture by the Gestapo after they lived in hiding while assisted by the Catholic Church. He spoke movingly of the final time he saw his father alive, and evoked the atmosphere of fear, horror and uncertainty during transportation across Slovakia and the Czech Republic in a putrid, stench-filled and overcrowded train. In the final years of World War II, Tomas and his pregnant mother Lolli survived arrest, internment at Szered Camp, transportation to Auschwitz and internment at Terezin where Lolli gave birth to another son Peter. Many times he came close to being killed but the incredible fighting spirit of his mother Lolli managed to keep both he and his baby brother alive in Terezin concentration camp against all odds. Tomas is one of only 123 survivors of 16,000 children who went through Terezin Concentration Camp during WWII.
What stood out from his story was Tomas’s incredible resilience, positive attitude, witty sense of humour and ability to adapt. His parting words of wisdom were: “You can’t stay bitter. You only have one bash at life, so try to make something of yourself and have a wonderful life.”
A truly incredible man and a remarkable story.
Our next Books & Blokes Breakfast will be on Monday 22 August, where Stan Grant will talk about his seminal book Talking to my Country. To RSVP click here.
