Colo

Just a reminder that the 7.3 class group are off to Colo next week (Monday to Thursday). You received an email about this but the details for the week are also below.

Donations

This morning Mrs Lesley Maher, Director for Mission here at the College along with two guests from Marist 180 thanked the boys for their donations to the Mother’s Day appeal. Collectively, Year 7 donated $1500 in vouchers a brilliant achievement.

This along with the $2000 raised during the Lenten appeal demonstrates what a wonderful community we have here in Year 7. Thank you to you and the boys for the contributions here.

Year 7 Dinner

The Year 7 Dinner is fast approaching and we will celebrate the night on Friday May 26 at 6.30pm in the Br Emilian Hall.

It is a brilliant night and one where we get to relax, get to know one another that little bit more and celebrate the achievements of the Year 7 boys.

There are a few families still to indicate if they are attending or not. If this is you can you please do asap by contacting Rose Unwin runwin@joeys.org

Vaccinations

Just a reminder that the boys will receive the FluVax next Wednesday. Please ensure that you return the forms to the health centre before then.

Digital Citizenship

Mr Graeme Kachel talking to the boys this morning about their online activities. He focused on their use of social media and their digital footprint. Privacy and safety were also key focus areas and the boys were given key tips to help maintain their safety and security online. I encourage you to have a chat with your son about this later tonight. The more we discuss and share with the boys the more informed they will become.

Rugby

Thank you to the following boys for assisting at the First and Second XV last weekend. Danny for running the scoreboard and results, Brady for running water and the kicking tee, Rylan, Tom, Ash and Tom for being ball boys. Sam, Jackson, Oliver and Toby also assisted as ball boys but unfortunately I didn’t manage to get a photo of them.

The second XV with the 13G’s after their game. The second XV boys supported and ran water for the 13G’s who came from behind to beat Waverley 13F’s 17-10. Thanks very much for the support boys. This is a great demonstration of the pride and spirit regularly on display here at the College.

Ground Location and Lunch Update

In discussion with a few parents, there seems to be some confusion surrounding ground locations and lunch. As indicated earlier in the year the ground locations are on the college website (http://www.joeys.org/sport/ground-locations/). You just need to select the appropriate school and the ground locations will appear. If your son is playing a school that is not part of the GPS, then a simple google search would provide your answer.

In relation to lunch, cut lunch means that the team will be provided lunch at the ground after their match (generally a packed lunch consisting of sandwiches or wraps, fruit and a snack). The coach is to pick up the lunch from the kitchen and takes this with the team as they travel on the bus to the match. I know a couple of coaches did not do this last week so hopefully this will be addressed for future matches.

Pie Van means that the boys get their lunch from the pie van at the venue where the First and Second XV are playing. As all games this weekend are played here (with the exception of Cross Country) lunch will be provided in the dining hall for those who remain at the College. As was the case last week, the boys can leave after their match and return for the Second XV match seated in the grandstand at 2pm. I will be discussing with the boys later in the week as to where we are placed in the stands and the uniform for the day. Please have this discussion with your son so that you are aware.

NAPLAN

The Year 7 boys have now completed the NAPLAN tests for 2017. Each and every boy behaved exceptionally well and worked to the best of their ability in the four tests. On Tuesday the boys completed the Language Conventions and Writing tests, on Wednesday they did the Reading test and today they finished up with the Numeracy Test.

These tests along with Grandparents Day have made it a big week for the boys. They have risen to the challenge and performed very well this week.

Grandparents Day

Without doubt, one of the most highly anticipated annual events at St Joseph’s College, Hunters Hill, is Grandparents Day. For many years the day has given boys in Years 7 and 8 the opportunity to spend a morning with their grandparents, sharing special moments that will long be remembered and celebrating their unique relationship.

More than 400 grandparents visited St Joseph’s for the event on 8 May, with some travelling great distances to join their grandsons for the occasion.

The morning began with a liturgy in the Br Emilian Hall, which focused on the special bonds that exist between grandparents and their grandchildren. During the liturgy boys lit candles for their grandparents and spent time reflecting on those who were unable to be there.

A tour of the College gave boys the opportunity to proudly show off the boarding areas, Resources Centre, dining rooms, main building and some of their other favourite areas, while also allowing grandparents who are former students to reminisce about their time at St Joseph’s and talk about the many changes that have taken place over the years.

Morning tea was served on the front lawn, giving grandparents and grandsons an often-too-rare opportunity to sit and talk together. The morning concluded with a number of student musical performances in the Brother Emilian Hall.

Hunters Hill Rugby Boarders Activity

A cracking day for rugby on Sydneys Northern Beaches saw the boarders playing Sunday Rugby with the ocean as a backdrop!  Today, a bit of extra fun as the boys had to take on fellow boarder Ed Gilmore’s Newport team in the U13’s!

A fantastic game of rugby by both teams with some great runs. A close fight to the end with the Breakers coming out on top 22-17!

A quick cool down with sausage sanga and a cold drink and the boys were ready to head to their next game against Drummoyne where they had a strong victory. A good weekend had by all.
