Last Saturday Wrap Up
Attached are the scores submitted from last weeks games
The scores show the achievements of the boys on the day. However, I would like to ponder on three things that aptly represents the special community at Joeys.
– There were 38 matches played at the Park and College grounds yesterday. It was very pleasing to note that 17 of these games were refereed by students. If we exclude the 2 games that were appointed by NSW Referees, over 47% of the games were managed by current students – a remarkable achievement. Special mention to Year 11 student Aidan O’Farrell – he started his day playing for the 6th XV in the 9.00am game on SJC No 1; he was next seen on College C at 11.00am refereeing the 13C game; he was out in the middle on College C again at 12.00pm refereeing the 13A game; following a short break he was back at SJC No 1 at 2.00pm running the line as assistant referee in the 2nd XV game.
– The 2nd XV (a number of Yr 11 students) gave the 13G team a tremendous lift when they turned up at 9.00am on College B to run the water for them. The care and attention of the 2nd XV boys is a great example for us all.

Second hand Basketball shoes + Joggers
Dear All Joeys Parent/Carers,
You may remember that over the last two years, we have been collecting second hand basketball shoes to send to the Philippines and Rugby boots to South Africa. For those of you who are new or have a poor memory ,for the last two years we have collected second hand basketball shoes to send to the Philippines and second hand rugby boots to South Africa.
We have sent over 300 pairs of footwear on the flying Kangaroo, since we started and have placed smiles on many faces with something we usually place in the bin. Now that the Basketball season has finished, we are hoping we can add to this number.
This year we are spreading the love. We spun the world globe and our finger stopped on ‘Smokey Mountain’ – a community of 60,000 who live on one of the biggest rubbish tips in SE Asia, just outside Manilla
So if you have any secondhand Basketball shoes AND/OR Runners/Joggers/Sneakers, Sandshoes in good-fair condition, could you please send them to your nearest Friendly Boarding Coordinator.
Regards
Darren Junee

2018 Sydney Writers Festival
Joey’s boys attend the 2018 Sydney Writers Festival
We had the great privilege of escorting 30 enthusiastic readers and writers from Year 7 – 11 to attend the 2018 Sydney writers Festival at Carriage works.
According to Robbie Matchett in Year 11 “All the boys who were able to attend thoroughly enjoyed the Sydney Writers’ Festival. We were able to listen to and interact with various authors both local and abroad in this unique experience. The highlight of the day was most definitely getting to hear the different approaches, ideas and perspectives of the speakers and the way in which this broadened our horizons as writers. My personal favourite author was most likely Patrick Ness for his wit and approach to his career and role as a young adult author. I most feel inspired to read “Me, Earl and the Dying Girl” by Jesse Andrews after having heard him speak today.”
