PE Incursion

On Friday March 2, Year 7 will participate in a PE Incursion at the Park. The boys will need to wear their PE uniform – White Shirt, PE shorts, white socks and joggers to school. As always they will also need to wear their Blazer to school and when they sign out at 5pm.

They will have normal classes from Periods 1-4.

Headmasters Assembly

Today Dr. Chris Hayes talked to the boys about a number of things but there were a couple of very important messages that I would like to share with you. I will also be reiterating these messages with the boys over the coming days.

  1. Struggles are good and they make us stronger – Clearly struggles are high on the agenda for the boys in Year 7 at the minute. It is important that we encourage the boys to persevere here and to push through these struggles and challenging times. By being patient and resilient they will be able to navigate their way through difficult periods and become stronger men in the process
  2. Put in the effort – The boys have heard this a lot. No one else can do this for them. They need to work hard and never give up. I often use quotes on the screens up here in the dorms as daily reminders for the boys to focus on this. The quote for the last two days has been “you only fail when you stop trying”. It also important that we encourage the boys to never give up, to set goals and to celebrate when they achieve these goals.

Dr. Hayes spoke brilliantly to the boys and also used the quote “the only person who is just average is the person who doesn’t try”. It is crucial that we encourage these young men to try new things, be resilient in the process and to always strive for better things. Joeys is renowned for producing fine young men of character. Let’s aim to instill this in the Year 7 group of 2018 nice and early.

Invite a Boarder Home for the Weekend

One of the great features of St Joseph’s College is the fact that Boarders and Day Boys interact regularly each and every day. Both parents and boys are starting to enquire about this and yes it is something that we do encourage. In order for this to happen, parents from both families need to provide consent. This can be done by getting the boys to exchange your phone numbers and going from there. Once the Social Contact List is finalised this process becomes much easier. The leave then needs to be uploaded to boardingware by the parents of the son who is a boarder.

From the Counsellors

Here at St Joseph’s College we have a wonderful team of counsellors who often provide excellent and thorough information for us all to use. Please see below some information that may be useful in discussing with your son. As always if you have any concerns please get in touch with myself or the counselling department.

Collaborative Learning

For the last two weeks, Year 7 boys have been partaking in Collaborative Learning during the second session of study. This involves group work and peer discussion. While it is a learning curve and there is plenty of room for improvement, the boys are working wonderfully at this and are really enjoying learning in the process. They are ‘learning how to learn’ and are already guiding each other into deep conversations. They have learnt some new strategies and are starting to implement these across a range of subject areas. It has brilliant to see and hear the boys solve problems together and help one another in the completion of school work. The image below is what we have been using to introduce the concept to the boys.
