NAPLAN overview

You should all be very proud of your sons over the last few days. They have been exceptional in the way in which they have conducted themselves during the NAPLAN examinations. Their behaviour, cooperation and work ethic has been superb. Peter Ross, Matthew Bookalil and myself have all praised them for their efforts and were very proud of each and everyone of them.

Empathy

Empathy has been our theme in Pastoral care over the last two weeks. I have quite possibly bored the boys to death talking about this but I feel that is something very important that we should aim to entrench in our young men. We are using this to encourage the boys to think before they act and to try and understand how others may feel in certain situations.

We have talked about the importance of empathy and to try and show empathy to others. We have also encouraged the boys to put themselves in someone else’s shoes. This is certainly something that will be ongoing for us and your support here would be greatly appreciated. If you have to opportunity to sit and discuss this with your son, I would be very grateful.

The image below has been on our notice boards and has been a focal point for us over the last two weeks.

Year 7 Concert

The combined Year 7 Concert rehearsing together. These boys meet every Monday afternoon to further develop their ensemble awareness and collaborative skills.

School Photos

The photos take place on Friday May 25 (two weeks time). The boys will need to be in BLUES for these photos so they are asked to wear their BLUES to school on this day. Your son should have brought home an ordering form for this, if he hasn’t, I have plenty of spares so please ask him to come and see me.

The boys are reminded that they need to have an appropriate hair cut for these photos (guidelines for this are on page 134 of the Student Diary) and wear clean polished shoes.

Parking this Saturday

Following on from last term, we will have restricted parking within the College grounds for Winter sport home games commencing this weekend, 12 May 2018.

During the hours of 7.30am and 2.30pm:

Gladesville Road & Mark Street gates will be open for pedestrian access only. The gates will be closed to vehicular access for all except staff. Ryde Road gates will be locked and the pedestrian gates will be open for access to the College. The bollards around circular lawn will be locked.

Early Morning Football Training

Mr Sharpley and the football staff have organised an alternative ‘senseball’ session for Wednesday mornings. This session runs from 6.30am to 7.15am and is for 13a, 13b and 14a players. The boys are to meet at the Basketball gym with their training gear and joggers/indoor shoes.

Once the training is complete the boys are to shower, get changed and then join the boarders for breakfast in the dining hall.

Second Hand Basketball Shoes and Joggers

Dear Yearr 7 Parent/Carers,

As most of you are new parents to Joeys, I just want to give you the heads up on something which is now in its 3rd year.
Over the last two years (with the help of the Joeys Family), we have been collecting second hand basketball shoes to send to the Philippines and Rugby boots to South Africa.
Over the next 3 weeks of this term, I am asking you, to help me stay good, on a promise I made to a mate of mine. If you are like me, you have every intention to help the less fortunate but continually put it on the back burner but my stupid mate actually went ahead and built a basketball court for the local kids in the Philippines……. What was he thinking!!!!

We have sent over 300 pairs of footwear on the flying Kangaroo, since we started and have placed smiles on many faces with something we usually place in the bin. Now that the Basketball season has finished, we are hoping we can add to this number.

This year we are spreading the love. We spun the world globe and our finger stopped on ‘Smokey Mountain’ – a community of 60,000 who live on one of the biggest rubbish tips in SE Asia, just outside Manilla

Over a cold soft drink, Chris McAlinden, dad of Aidan (2015) and I came up with the name for our drive “Joseph Jefferson Jackson Shoe Drive” ……… Why JJJSD you ask….. Google it!….. and they will come!

Anyway with the help of your current Boarding Coordinator (Sir James McKay) as a collection point, could I please ask that if you have any second hand Basketball shoes or Joggers collecting dust, could you please send them his way…… I can guarantee that by Term 4, your son’s shoes will not go close to fitting him.

Thanks for your support in advance.
