Welcome Back

Welcome to Term Three everyone. As discussed earlier this will be a big term. 10 weeks, two rallies, the GPS Athletics Carnival and a Family Mass. I have attached the dates for these events just in case you missed this in the earlier emails. Before we know it, your son(s) will be in their final weeks of Year 7. How time flies.

It has been great to have the boys back and to see all their happy smiley faces. It has also been wonderful to hear about the many adventures over the holiday period. All the boys have settled in nicely and have made a positive start to the term. Peter Ross and I met with the boys on Tuesday morning and stressed the importance for a positive start to the term. It is important that the boys set high standards and maintain these over the course of this long, busy term. In starting well, Peter and I encouraged the boys to focus on their standard of dress, their greetings and interactions with one another and their teachers and to strive for academic success. This tied in nicely with Peter’s session on goal setting. More to follow on this.

I have also encouraged the boys to now display some leadership skills. They have been here long enough to know the drill and we are encouraging the boys to lead by example. It has been pleasing to see various examples of this on display particularly on the playground.

This term, Resilience will be the focus during Pastoral Care time. This will kick off with activities during Pastoral Care lessons next week and we will look at addressing aspects such as gratitude, emotions and empathy (ongoing from the last two terms).

Thanks for a smooth start to the term and I look forward to seeing you all out and about.

Books and Blokes Invitation

Books & Blokes Breakfast with Darren Longbottom and Tim Rushby-Smith.

How a freak accident turned an Australian surfer’s dream into a nightmare.
Beyond the Break is a compelling story of mateship, resilience, and coming to terms with the life-changing consequences of riding a single wave.

When: THURSDAY 16 August 2018
Time: 7:30am
Where: Resources Centre
RSVP https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/BooksNBlokesLongbottom

We would like to invite you to attend our Term 3 Books & Blokes Breakfast, to listen to the incredible life story of pro surfer Darren Longbottom and his biographer Tim Rushby-Smith.
Darren ‘Daz’ Longbottom’s love of surfing was instilled in him from day one. As the son of surfing pioneer and board-maker Rossco and older brother to legendary big-wave specialist Dylan, Daz grew up in Cronulla and paddled out with the world champions of the era from a young age.

Fast-forward to Daz’s adult life, and the remote Mentawai Islands was pretty much the last spot in Indonesia he hadn’t surfed. After Daz’s daughter turned one, he knew it was his time to take on the West Sumatran waves. Never could he have imagined, as he kissed his wife and child goodbye, how difficult the road back to them would be, or how his life would be so irreversibly and profoundly changed.

We would love to see you at this event.

White Elephant Stall Information from the Spring Fair Committee

Dear SJC families,
With the holidays coming up, the 2018 Spring Fair committee invites you to take some time to sort out your cupboards and garage and gather up items you may no longer want or need. Collections for Spring Fair will take place in Term 3.
Before choosing an item to give to White Elephant, consider whether you would want someone else to pay money for it. Soft toys are not always in good condition, games are missing parts or electrical products don’t work. Year 7 (as you may know having done this stall) work really hard to pull a huge amount of items together to sell for 100% profit to the P&F, so please don’t make them throw out your rubbish. It’s a terrific bonding experience for them (!!), and you may like to have a look at the Marie Kondo method on the ‘Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up’ to ensure they enjoy it!

Details of drop-offs will be published in Term 3.
Have a great break with your boys.

Music Opportunity

A note from the music department below:

Would you like to give your students an amazing opportunity to travel to New Zealand and record one of their original songs that could then end up on national TV?
XVenture and ecostore are supporting talented songwriters aged between 11 and 18 years and are giving them the opportunity to win a trip to New Zealand to record their very own track that could be on the XVenture Family Challenge presented by ecostore TV Series on Australian and New Zealand national TV!

Finishing Up

With the final day being a week away, the boys have been encouraged to start the pack up process. As with last term, everything will need to be removed from your sons press. This is to ensure the cleaners can get in and do a thorough job and also to enable the rotation of boys in each dorm.

In saying this the boys should be able to leave by 4pm on Thursday June 28 if:

  • their press is empty
  • their lock is placed in the appropriate milk crate and left at the College
  • boarding areas are spotless
  • beds stripped and drawers empty

Day students and Weekly Boarders will need to take all their belongings with them while Full Boarders can leave a bag and their bedding in the storage room in Dorm 12.

Departure Times

Last minute departure times are proving to be a little problematic for the staff on duty in the dorms at 5pm. If we could try and make these changes earlier and by 3.30pm that would be very helpful as the staff are often at sport after this time and trying to adjust this at the last minute with a large amount of boys signing out can be difficult. Thanks for your cooperation here.
