10.40AM-11.00AM LENTEN APPEAL – RECESS CAKE STALL
SJC Mission Office, in conjunction with the P&F, is running a cake stall at recess. Your Year Reps are asking families to bake or buy cakes, biscuits and slices and send them in (drop items to your sons’ ref – Year 7 to the Year 8 ref). They are also asking for parents to come and run the cake stall and for the boys to bring $5 (or more) to buy a plate of delicious items.
Our Mission Office campaign for 2018 focuses on the story of the first Marist school in Bangladesh and in particular how families, as a result of this new school, now see a brighter future for their children. Many families in Bangladesh are reliant on work in tea gardens. Tea companies also control housing and medical access, meaning entire families day-to-day existence is tightly controlled. It is estimated that over 700,000 people live in the tea gardens, with more than 100,000 of them being children of school age. Almost half of all villages in the tea gardens have no educational facility, which contributes to the shockingly low literacy rate of tea garden children. St Marcellin School in Giasnogor opened in January 2017 and is providing secondary education to 96 Year Six children. Each year until 2021, the school will add a new year level until grade 10 and a maximum capacity of 480 students is achieved. This will include boarding facilities for 90 girls and 90 boys. The purpose of St Marcellin School is to provide free education and boarding to tea garden children that enables them to break the cycle of poverty and rise above the bonded life that they were born into.
The Sign Up roster has a spot across all year groups from 9.00-10.30am and from 10.00 – 11.30pm. It is often the case that younger age groups fill up while parents from older age groups have vacancies. If a year group fills it would be wonderful to have parents volunteer across other year groups.

The proceeds from this cake stall, along with each of the year groups’ Lenten contributions, will be donated to the St Marcellin School in Giasnogor.
Could baked goods please be dropped off at the appropriate locations no later than 10am on Friday 18 May. Cake boxes are available from reception from Monday 7 May 2018.
