Joeys Year 9 2018

Return for Term 3

Dear Parents and Carers of Year 9,

I hope you have had a great school holiday break with your son. It doesn’t seem very long ago since they left! Below are a few items you need to be aware of.

Return to school

All boarders are due back by 8:00pm next Monday 23 July. Dorms will open from around lunch time on that day but will not be supervised until 5:00pm. Classroom lockers are accessible all day on Monday. Day students are due back by 8:00am next Tuesday 24 July. As usual, the boys need to make sure they return with all their items of uniform.

Day student departure times

Please don’t forget to enter departure times for your son for next week (5:00 pm, 8:00pm or 9:00pm). If you are entering times for the whole term don’t forget to do Monday Week 2 as it won’t be available to set for Week 1.

A note on Day student departure times

When setting departure times now, and during the term, could I encourage you to stick to the times agreed with your son each week? We spend a lot of time trying to develop good study habits to prepare the boys for future years of study. One of these is realising that simply completing the minimum homework set in class is only the start. There are lots of things they can do (and should do) to consolidate their learning and regularly revise. The evening study supervisors can help them with this. “I finished all my homework in class” shouldn’t really be a reason to change times! I also think that having agreed with you what times they will stay back each week then they make a commitment to you and to their studies, and they should stick to it.

Abbotsleigh Dance

On Thursday 2 August we have a dance with Abbotsleigh, at Abbotsleigh. The boys will catch a bus from the College straight after dinner and will return around 9:15 pm at which time Day Students can depart. If you wish to pick up your son directly from Abbotleigh at around 8:30 pm, please just let me know by email. Dress for the dance is greys with College blazer.

Compulsory Events

I have emailed you a copy of the list of important dates that I sent to you at the start of the year. All boys are expected to be at these events. We believe that the compulsory events at Joeys are a very important part of the development of individual students and are one of the factors which contribute to the sense of community and support that all boys benefit from here at the College.

Father son weekend at Colo

This is on 25/26 August. If you are attending and have not returning the booking form, please do so as soon as possible. Details and the booking form are available here: https://blogs.joeys.org/2018year9/2018/06/19/year-9-father-son-camp-invitation/

Goals

As you would be aware, we spent some time earlier in the year helping the boys to set some goals. Most boys submitted their goals and I forwarded you a copy. In the next week or two we will be asking the boys to revisit their goals and set some new ones. It is a good time to do this now after a break, having received a full academic report, and having started the winter sport competition. You may wish to discuss the contents of your son’s full academic report with him before he returns to school with a view to setting some new goals.

Enjoy the rest of your break and I look forward to working with your sons again this Term.

Regards,

Mick
