ANZAC day Assembly
ANZAC day was last week so we observed ANZAC day at assembly today. The Australian, New Zealand and French flags were placed on stage. Year 9’s Henri du Maurier carried the French flag.
The last post was played and the Ode was recited by the boys.
Lieutenant-Colonel Heath (a former Joeys parent) addressed the students about old boys of the College who have served in the armed services. He spoke about a young man by the name of Norman Gilroy from Marist Brothers College at Kogarah who served in the First World War as a telegraphist. Later, as Cardinal Gilroy, he blessed the foundation stone of the College Chapel as the first Australian-
born Cardinal. Also Lieutenant-Colonel Health challenged all Joeys boys to reflect on the service of the many old boys who paid the ultimate sacrifice in many theatres of war.
Dr Chris Hayes, the Headmaster, reflected on his Father’s service in World War II, who was also a Joeys old boy.
