Cricket Representative Honours for Will Coffey and Will Maffey
Cricket Representative Honours for Will Coffey and Will Maffey
Following the GPS selection trial, Will Coffey, Will Maffey and Drew Sellers (Y12) were selected in the Combined GPS XI to play a series of representative cricket matches during February and March. Will Coffey’s selection came off the back of consistent performances throughout the GPS Competition and good form in the AW Green U/16 where his team (Northern District) took out the final. Will Coffey was also awarded the Kevin Cunningham Medal for Player of the Final with his match winning score of 53 runs. Will Maffey’s selection came of the back of good form at 46th Australasian Marist Cricket Carnival where he was named in the team of the Carnival and consistent performances throughout the GPS Competition.
The GPS XI played the Independent Schools Association (ISA) at Newington on 27 February. In a dominant performance, GPS 1/136 defeated ISA 10/134. Neither Wills’ had the opportunity to bat but Will Maffey bowled extremely well to secure the figures of 1/14 off 5 overs.
On Sunday, the GPS XI played a Combined Associated Schools (CAS) XI at Curagul Field (Knox). In a strong performance, GPS 9/259 (50 overs) defeated CAS 10/195. Will Coffey opened the batting for GPS and scored 19 runs to help get the innings away to a reasonable start. Will Maffey batted at number 11 and remained 1 not out when the innings finished. The star of the innings was Drew Sellers (Y12) from Joeys who scored a magnificent 106 runs off 89 balls to help GPS to their winning total. Will Maffey had limited opportunity with the ball on a non-fast bowler friendly pitch and only bowled 2 overs.
The final representative fixture for the GPS XI is against a CricketNSW Invitational XI on Sunday 17 March on SJC No 1. The game starts at 10.00am and it would be great to see some Joeys support for Will, Will and Drew.
In addition to their GPS XI selection, Will Coffey and Will Maffey were nominated by GPS to attend the Combined Independent Schools (CIS) trials on 20/21 February at Blacktown International Sports Park. Trialists came from the GPS, CAS and ISA sporting associations along with other independent non-Catholic Schools from throughout NSW. In all, over 50 boys attended the trials. Will Coffey and Will Maffey played some very impressive cricket over the two days to earn selection in the 12 man Combined Independent Schools (CIS) squad. This is the first Joeys representation in this team since the schoolboys format was changed in 2017. The CIS team will play in the NSW All Schools Cricket Carnival on 12/13/14 March at the Raby sporting complex (Campbelltown). Other participants in the Carnival are Combined High Schools No 1 (CHS1), Combined High Schools No 2(CHS2) and Combined Catholic Colleges (CCC).
