Overall, Saturday’s home game against Riverview was an incredibly successful and enjoyable day. We finished with a total of 32 wins, 1 draw and 6 losses, making it our most successful day of the season across the program.
There were plenty of highlights; starting off with the 13E’s putting on an 8.00am exhibition, the 16As handing Riverview their first team loss in 3 years, and our 2nd XV’s gutsy 60-minute performance, to stay on top of the GPS table.
As always, there was much hype and expectation surrounding the 3:15pm fixture. Our boys were confident on the back of some strong recent performances and were keen to get one back, after a heartbreaking loss at Leichhardt Oval. And we were clinical in the opening 15 minutes.
Some excellent multi-phase attack and a powerful rolling maul, put us in front 14 – 0. A solo effort from the Riverview number 10 (who was one of their best) gave Riverview a quick response. Year 10 student, Justice Taumoepeau had the whole crowd on their feet. His incredible 30m run, shaking off four Riverview defenders, gave Joeys a 19 – 5 lead.
To Riverview’s credit, they remained composed, stuck to their game plan and grinded their way back into the match. Despite some courageous efforts from Vice-captains, Oscar Jorgensen and Patrick Young, Riverview were too strong, eventually finishing on top, 35 – 24.This week we take on The King’s School, away in Parramatta. Whilst their depth will be tested against many of our teams, their A sides are among the strongest in the competition. The King’s 1st XV remain undefeated this season and their 2nd XV are a single point behind our boys – setting up a Grand Final for the 2nd XV GPS Competition.
