All teams travelled to Kings for the last round of the 2023 season. Kings showed significant depth in all grades and proved tough opponents across the board.
The 2nd XI finished the season true to recent form, defeating King’s 2-0 and finishing the season in 3rd place place – a remarkable achievement after a difficult start to the season. With all players new to the side this year, the experience the boys gained will be invaluable as they progress into future seasons at the College.
The 1st XI had a difficult start to their match, conceding from a penalty kick in the first 15 minutes. As they did many times before, they bounced back to level the score, though conceded a second just before halftime in front of a boisterous corner of King’s supporters. The tussle continued in the 2nd half, and spectators witnessed what was perhaps the goal of the season when Oliver Burnett received a lofted pass and with a deft touch turned and fired the ball into the top corner. To King’s credit, they were on a mission and regained their lead not long before the end of the match, and ultimately won 3-2. Though our boys were disappointed not to win their last match, they were proud to finish the season as premiers, and this is the first time in College history that the 1st XI has won back-to-back premierships. A special congratulations to the Year 12 students who were involved in both 1st XI teams: Nicholas Burnett (C), Sonny Matchett (VC), Oliver Burnett, Aidan Renshaw and Vitorio Ribeiro Sardinha.
The rally on Saturday night followed by the 1st & 2nd XI Football dinner was a memorable occasion and a fitting way to celebrate the achievements of these teams – made even more special by the Matildas’ win on penalties which we watched in delight as the dinner commenced.
