On 27 May our Football teams faced off against Grammar in Round 1 of the AAGPS Premiership competition, with all matches played at their grounds in Rushcutters Bay.
The 2nd XI and got off to a roaring start against the Plate competition winners, with Ziggy Gilleland (Y11) netting a goal in 5th minute. Grammar showed their class in their domination of ball possession and capitalised on this with a goal early in the second half. Unfortunately, the deadlock couldn’t be broken, and the match finished as a draw, though this was a very strong performance from the boys and shows that they are capable of matching the best teams in the competition.
The 1st XI took to the field in their new triple-bar jerseys which were designed by several of our Year 12 students. They also had a fantastic start, with vice-captain Sonny Matchett scoring in the 10th minute after winning the ball from a high press. Grammar replied soon after, with a goal from a fast break from their striker leveling the score. The contest was very tense for most of the match, with excellent defence on show from both sides. Oliver Burnett teased the travelling crowd with a free kick opportunity in the second half going just over the bar. Not long after, the team won another free kick in a great
position following a very strong 10 minutes of attacking play. This time, 1st XI captain Nicholas Burnett stood up
to the mark and watched his shot sail into the top left corner, scoring what was the winning goal.
