Football v Shore

by | 17 June

After a rejuvenating long-weekend break, our footballers returned to the field with renewed energy and determination. The matches against Shore in Round 3 marked their final push before the holidays. The boys were eager to give their all and end a busy term of football on a high note.

Saturday marked the first home matches for the 1st & 2nd XI in the premiership competition. The 2nd XI had a difficult start to their match, conceding two early goals from a rampaging Shore attack. As has been the case this season, the team firmed up their football after the first ten minutes and showed promise, however a third goal to Shore late in the first half made it difficult for a comeback. Though the match ended as a 1-5 loss, the team played impressive football in moments, and will be looking to find their consistency after the break.

The 1st XI had the opposite start to the 2nd XI, with Sonny Matchett scoring within the first five minutes from a high press. This lifted the crowd and the team, and the boys created chance after chance throughout the first half. The Shore defence held strong, and despite their impressive play we entered half time with only one goal. Soon after the break, a typical driving run from Oliver Burnett into the box led to a penalty being awarded. Oliver slotted the penalty, and the team continued to dominate the match, sealing the deal with a third goal, and a second on the day to Sonny from a beautiful Nicholas Burnett through-ball. This win saw the 1st XI as outright leaders in the competition table for the first time this season, and this should give the boys confidence heading into the break, after which they will face Sydney Boys’ High at Centennial Park in Round 4.
