Football v High

by | 25 July

Our footballers returned to action on Saturday to face Sydney Boys High away. It was a great day overall for our teams, who won 8 out of our 13 matches. Nonetheless, High put up a strong contest in all grades.

The 2nd XI showcased their prowess from the very start, with an explosive opening as Oscar Pestonji (Y9) unleashed a rocket of a goal, setting the tone for an action-packed match. Jonothan Lamwarren (Y10) continued the momentum with a brilliant team goal not long after. Despite High’s resurgence in the second half, our defence held strong and the team secured a well-deserved 2-0 win.

In contrast to the 2nd XI’s early lead, the 1st XI encountered a tough start, conceding a goal in the 13th minute to a swift High counterattack. However, showing resilience and unwavering determination, the boys kept their composure and remained unfazed. In the second half, they earned themselves a crucial penalty, which Oliver Burnett (Y12) coolly converted, reigniting their spirits. The team’s confidence soared, and they scored a second goal just five minutes later courtesy of Nicholas Burnett (Y12).

A tightly contested match ensued until a pivotal moment when substitute Jonathan Lamwarren (Y10) secured the third goal for Joeys. In a twist of fate, a High own goal added to the lead, resulting in an impressive 4-1 victory for the 1st XI. This result saw the 1st XI go 5 points clear at the top of the table, with four other teams currently tied for second place. This week, we face a strong Newington outfit at home. The 1st XI will kick off at 10:30am and the 2nd XI at 9:00am.
