Year 12
During the HSC course please refer to this page for information regarding your sons Mathematics. This page is split into 4 sections. In year 12 students at SJC have a choice of 4 courses in Mathematics. General Mathematics, Mathematics, Extension One and Extension Two. Please see below for information regarding each course.
General Mathematics
In 2012 we have 4 General Mathematics classes. This is consistent with the state average where approximately 50% of students studying some form of Maths are in the General course. The teachers of these classes are:
Mr Mark Williams
Mr Paul Hallam
Mr Kim Rudder
Mr Chris Hannan
The next assessment task in the General Maths course is the Half-yearly examination which is on during the exam block in weeks 6 and 7.
Topics that will be tested in this exam include term 4 (yr 11) work on Credit and Borrowing, Area and Volume and Data. It also includes the topics of Trigonometry, the normal distributionand and annuities which are studied this term.
The expectation is that a student at St Joseph’s studying the General Mathematics course should be spending 30 minutes per night completing homework and any other assigned tasks that may be given by their teacher.
How to study General Mathematics
In our experience (the Mathematics Department) a student must complete 3 vital tasks in order to achieve success in studying Mathematics.
1. Complete the set homework every night. This is a must as Maths is a subject that is cumulative and relies on previous knowledge in order to solve problems.
2. Review ket facts and formulae at the end of each topic
3. Complete as many past papers as possible. This third point is the most effective way to revise for the major assessments and examinations. Before a student sits the General Mathematics HSC examination they should (at an absolute minimum) have completed the past 10 years of HSC papers.
Mathematics
In 2012 we have 2 Mathematics classes. However, these students must compete against the Extension One boys in their examinations. Mr Ralis Vane-Tempest and Mrs Veronica Sherrah are the teachers of the Mathematics course. The next assessment task in the Mathematics course is the Half-yearly examination in weeks 6 and 7 of term 1.
The expectation is that a student at St Joseph’s studying the Mathematics course (2 Unit) should be spending 30 minutes per night completing homework and any other assigned tasks that may be given by their teacher.

Extension One
Students studying the Extension One course will be enrolled in two Mathematics courses and will sit two different examinations for the HSC. Studying the Extension One course in 2012 are 4 classes in total. These comprise two Year 12 classes of Extension One, the Extension Two class that also completes the Extension One assessments and the Accelerated Year 11 Extension One class.
Teachers of our HSC Extension One course are:
Mr Anthony Macks
Mr Greg Smith
Mr Magdy Habib
Mr Greg Thompson
The expectation is that a student at St Joseph’s studying the Extension One Mathematics (3 Unit) course should be spending 45 minutes per night completing homework and any other assigned tasks that may be given by thier teacher.
How to study Extension One Mathematics
In our experience (the Mathematics Department) a student must complete 3 vital tasks in order to achieve success in studying Mathematics.
1. Complete the set homework every night. This is a must as Maths is a subject that is cumulative and relies on previous knowledge in order to solve problems.

3. Complete as many past papers as possible. This third point is the most effective way to revise for the major assessments and examinations. Before a student sits the Extension One Mathematics HSC examination they should (at an absolute minimum) have completed the past 15 years of HSC papers in both Mathematics and Extension One.
