Year 11
Welcome to the Preliminary Mathematics page. Within this page you should find all the information regarding your son’s Year 11 Mathematics course.
Mathematics is a subject that requires constant revision. Completing daily homework tasks is vital for success in senior Mathematics. In addition to this please encourage your son to completed as many past papers as possible in the lead up to any major assessment for Mathematics. Past papers are the key in identifying areas of weakness before the assessment and then your son can approach thier teacher for additional help in any areas required.
Please note that a free tutoring session can be booked by your son 4 nights per week (Monday – Thursday). This tutoring session is conducted in the Resources Centre by paid tutors that the College provide. Each student in Year 11 has access to 20 minutes of tutoring per night with 14 spots avaliable. Please encourage your son to take advantage of this wonderful service that is provided.
In Year 11 Mathematics there are 3 options avaliable to a student at Joeys (excluding the accelerated Mathematics students). These options are:
General Mathematics
Mathematics
Extension One
Please see below for information regarding each course.
General Mathematics
In 2012 we have 4 General Mathematics classes starting the HSC course. The teachers of the classes are:
Mr Miguel Nunes
Mr Paul Hallam
Mrs Nata Zirilli
Mr Kim Rudder
The first assessment task in the HSC General Mathematics course will be held on Monday Week 8 of Term (on the first 2 topics of the HSC course).
The expectation is that a student at St Joseph’s studying the General Mathematics course should be spending 30 minutes per night completing homework and any other assigned tasks that may be given by thier teacher.
How to study General Mathematics
In our experience (the Mathematics Department) a student must complete 3 vital tasks in order to achieve success in studying Mathematics.
1. Complete the set homework every night. This is a must as Maths is a subject that is cumulative and relies on previous knowledge in order to solve problems.
2. Review key facts at the end of each topic
3. Complete as many past papers as possible. This third point is the only real way to revise for the major assessments and examinations. Before a student sits the General Mathematics HSC examination they should have completed the past 10 years of HSC papers.
Mathematics
In 2012 we have 2 Mathematics classes starting the HSC course. However, these students must compete against the Extension One boys in their examinations. Mr Ralis Vane-Tempest and Mrs Veronica Sherrah are the teachers of the Mathematics course. The first assessment task in the Mathematics course will be held on Monday of Week 8, covering the first 2 topics of Differenciation and Integration.
The expectation is that a student at St Joseph’s studying the Mathematics course (2 Unit) should be spending 30 minutes per night completing homework and any other assigned tasks that may be given by their teacher.

Students studying the Extenion One course will be enrolled in two Mathematics courses and will sit two different examinations for the HSC. In 2012 there are 2 Year 11 classes studying the HSC Extension One course, as well as the Year 10 Accelerated class.

Students enrolled in the Extension One course sit both Extension One exams as well as the Mathematics exams. The assessment tasks in term one are listed below.
