Year 9

Year 9 is a critical year for your sons Mathematics. It is in Year 9 that for the first time the students are split into distinct courses. There are 2 courses offered in Year 9 for 2012. They are Advanced (Stage 5.3), Intermediate (Stage 5.2). Year 9 is also the time we begin to prepare our top students for the accelerated program where both Year 9 and 10 courses are completed in Year 9, with capable students then being allowed to complete the Year 11 course in Year 10 and the HSC in Year 11. Please see below for information regarding the course your son is studying.

Importantly, it should be noted that as a general rule only students in ther 5.3 course should attempt the more challenging Mathematics and Extension One courses in years 11 and 12. Students enrolled in the 5.2 course should only attempt General Mathematics in the senior years.

Year 9 Stage 5.3 – Advanced Mathematics

In 2012 there will be five Year 9 (5.3) Mathematics classes. These classes are graded based on Year 8 results. Every boy studying Year 9 (5.3) Mathematics covers the same classwork and sit the same examinations. Those in the top class (accelerated) also sit some assessments from the year 10 course work that they also cover. The assessment tasks will be designed to reflect Bloom’s Taxonomy. All students could be expected to achieve about a third of the available marks by nswering questions which examine their knowledge and understanding of the concepts taught. A further third of the available marks will be allocated to questions which requires students to demonstrate their ability to apply their knowledge in a range of more difficult questions. The remaining third of available marks will be allocated to questions which are designed to challenge and hence differentiate the top students in the year group.

Topics studied in Term 4

There will be 3 topics covered in Term 4 of 2012. These are:
A quick review of Year 8 skills then Algebraic skills
Linear Equations and Inequations
Deductive Geometry
Consumer Arithmetic

The frst assessment task for term 4 will occur in Week 3 and the Yearly Examination will be held in the last week of Term.
