Year 10
Welcome to the Year 10 Maths page where you should find all the information you require about the study of Mathematics at SJC.
Year 10 is where the foundations for senior study in Mathematics are set. In 2012 there are 2 courses offered in Year 10 Mathematics. They are Advanced (Stage 5.3) and Intermediate (Stage 5.2). Year 10 is also when our accelerated students being the preliminary (Yr 11) course in Mathematics and Extension One.
Importantly, it should be noted that as a general rule only students in ther 5.3 course should attempt the more challenging Mathematics and Extension One courses in years 11 and 12. Students enrolled in the 5.2 course should only attempt General Mathematics in the senior years.
All assessment tasks will be designed to reflect Bloom’s Taxonomy. All students could be expected to achieve about a third of the available marks by nswering questions which examine their knowledge and understanding of the concepts taught. A further third of the available marks will be allocated to questions which requires students to demonstrate their ability to apply their knowledge in a range of more difficult questions. The remaining third of available marks will be allocated to questions which are designed to challenge and hence differentiate the top students in the year group.
Year 10 Stage 5.3 – Advanced Mathematics
In 2012 there will be five Year 10 (5.3) Mathematics classes. These classes are the same as the Year 9 classes except for miminal movement based on results and work ethic.
Topics studied in Term 4 in Year 10 Advanced (5.3)
There will be 3 topics covered in Term 4 of 2012. These are:
Congruence & Similarity
Surface Area and Volume
Trigonometry
The first assessment task will take place in Week 3 and is a common paper that all students in Year 10 will undertake. The End of Year exam will take place in the last week of Term.

Expectations of a student studying Mathematics in Year 10 (5.3) at SJC
A student in Year 10 studying Mathematics is expected to:
– Bring all the required equipment to class (ie Exercise books, Textbook, Calculator, Stationary)
– Compete all written work in class and homework each night (25 mins per night)
– Respect the learning environment and the learning of others
– Work quietly when instructed
Year 10 Stage 5.2 – Intermediate Mathematics
In 2012 there will be three Year 10 (5.2) Mathematics classes. These classes are similar to the Year 9 classes exceept for some movement based on results and study habits. Every boy studying Year 10 (5.2) Mathematics covers the same classwork and sit the same examinations. The assessment tasks will be designed to reflect Bloom’s Taxonomy.
Topics studied in Term 4
There will be 3 topics covered in Term 2 of 2012. These are:
Trigonometry
Coordinate Geometry
Simultaneous Equations
The first assessment task will take place on the 14th May and the HY exam will take place after the June long weekend.
