National Reading Hour

Next Thursday August 17, we will participate in the National Reading Hour. The offical date for this is September 17 but we will do it earlier to coincide with Book Week. The Resources Centre are leading this and the boys will need to bring a book to school on this day as they will not be able to borrow one. There are many benefits to reading and hopefully by being involved in this it will encourage the boys to read more widely.

Resilience

This has been a bit of a theme in Year 7 of late and the have had a bit of a discussion with this in their pastoral groups as well. Unfortunately today we didn’t have much time to delve into this but the focus in pastoral care tomorrow includes strategies on how to become more resilient.

The boys will watch a quick video and then discuss the strategies that can help to become more resilient. The focus here is on mental, physical and emotional wellbeing.  These strategies include

  1. Ensuring they have enough sleep
  2. Staying connected with friends and family
  3. Setting goals
  4. Express emotions
  5. Make time for yourself

Student Art Exhibition

Dear Parents,

I know that many families have received our invitation to attend the opening of the Student Art exhibition. For families new to the college, this exhibition surveys the artwork of all students studying Visual Arts and Photography and Digital Media. A selection of artwork by your son will be displayed alongside the work of our elective students and HSC candidates.

Your son will be able to attend the opening at 6.30pm on the evening of Friday 11th August if he is accompanied by parents or a guardian. I will be asking the boys next week whether they will be attending the opening. Some details are below:

Opening: Friday 11th August, 6.30pm, in the Farrell Auditorium

to be opened by artist Nicholas Harding.

Supper and drinks will be provided.

Additional viewing time will be on Saturday 12th August from 9am -1pm and Sunday 13th August from 9am-2pm.

We hope that many of you can make it.

Regards,

Ms Michelle Tinta

Visual Arts Coordinator

Homelessness Week 2017

During our prayer at the Headmasters Assembly today, we focused on those who are homeless.

As this week is homlessness week it was an opportunity to raise awareness of those people who are homeless and the issues that they face. As a community we prayed for them but you may also like to discuss this with your son if you get a chance.

Summer Sport

A reminder that Summer Sport commences next week with selection trials. Please ensure that your son has the necessary equipment with him as soon as possible. If your son has changed sports from earlier in the year, I suggest that you don’t buy a uniform just yet. He can train in his PE uniform for the moment.

For those boys who have selected rowing, this will be a big change. The boys have received information from the rowing convenor (see below). You may want to take note of the early training times!!!

Congratulations on selecting rowing for your summer sport! The selections start next week. Please see the details below for the selection sessions:

  • Please be at the Brother Naughton Theatre on Tuesday morning (15/8/17) at 6:30am for the first session. I will introduce myself and the coaches and the following things will be measured: height, weight, arm span etc.
  • The next session is at the boatshed at 6:00am on Thursday morning (17/8/17) for an Erg test. You will need to row as far as you can in 1 minute on an Erg.
  • On Saturday (19/8/17) you will need to be at the boatshed at 7:00am for an on water test. (Boys doing Athletics DO NOT need to attend this session)

Any questions relating to rowing please contact the age group convenor, Mr Josh Clark jclark@joeys.org

Winter Sports Photos

With the conclusion of the Winter Sports Season almost here, it’s photo time. The boys will need their playing strip for the photos including boots and shin pads (they will not need their tennis racquet). The Winter Tennis boys have their photos tomorrow afternoon and all other sports will have their photos next Wednesday and Thursday. I am yet to receive the order of this but as soon as I know I will pass it on to you and the boys.
