Gaming

I recently posted some information about gaming and the potential impacts of this on young men. In Year 7, the team are taking a bit of a stance here to try and limit the boys exposure to computer games, namely Fortnite. Fortnite is a very popular game and also an addictive on but like most things if managed in moderation it can be ok. The boarders now have limited access to their laptops over the weekends as these are collected on both Friday and Saturday nights. We are also asking the boys to get off their laptops in the dorms by 8.30pm. This is to ensure that they are having one hour without technological equipment before they go to bed (also published earlier). The aim here is to ensure the boys get a solid and unbroken nights sleep (information on this can be found in the earlier post titled the Benefits of Sleep).

On the news over the weekend, the were a number of segments focusing on Fortnite and what parents can do to limit their child’s exposure to the game. Being available in app form and also on PC it makes game incredibly accessible. One such segment referred to cyber safety platforms and internet filters with a particular focus on one called Family Zone https://www.familyzone.com/au/ Family Zone runs via the cloud which means you can block your sons access to the game even on their phone. Other examples to look at Net Nanny and Qustodio. Below is an article on Fortnite that I think you might find useful.
