Year 10 Drama

Posted by: | April 13, 2011 | No Comment |

‘Wednesday of Week 9 saw the Year 10 Drama students perform their Commedia dell’Arte scenarios in the Drama Studio. The student audience, as well as Mr Dawson and Mr Macks, supported the boys in this endeavour very positively. Commedia dell’Arte is an improvisational theatre form developed in Italy and at its height during the 15th to 17th centuries. It was based on stock characters, many with half mask, using slapstick and physical humour to take a satirical look at society. The advent of the printing press and indoor theatres saw its demise, however it was ‘rediscovered’ in the 20th century as a great way of including the basics of comedy which all audiences love…think Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Laurel and Hardy and the like and you can see how the master and servant/mixed up messages/physical theatre of 15th century Italy has made it to our daily lives in modern entertainment. The boys performed excellently with some stand out physical work and improvisation.’

2011 Writing Competition

Have you recently written a piece of creative writing which you think deserves a wider audience? Writing competitions offer budding young writers an opportunity to develop their creative writing skills.

A number of competitions are held throughout the year, offering cash prizes, or donations of books, vouchers and equipment to the student or student’s school. Finalists are also in the running to have their work published.

Most competitions welcome submissions in both poetry and short stories.

Look out for the ‘Writing Competitions’ posters around the school or contact Ms Bradridge in the English Department or at mbradridge@joeys.org

Don’t forget ‘Kids of Dreams’ – Joeys own art and creative writing publication. Open to all students from year &-12, ‘Kids’ is a wonderful opportunity to showcase Joeys writing and visual art talent. Please see Ms Reim in the Resource Centre for further details. Deadline for submissions for ‘Kids of Dreams’ is early September.

Year 10 work experience

Congratulations to the many students who have already arranged their work places. Students should see me (any afternoon after school) if they need help with securing or finalising their work experience.

I attended the UTS Career Advisers information day yesterday for a presentation on graduate outcomes and was reminded of the importance of students securing relevant work experience during their school and university years if they are to compete for the best graduate opportunities. The university also spoke about student facebook pages. Companies regularly check facebook pages and students are advised to consider the content of their facebook pages in this light. Students should use their Joeys email address (rather than a Hotmail address) for all correspondence relating to work experience.

All work experience documents are available on ilearn. Copies have also been emailed to all Year 10 students should they need to forward these documents to employers.

Jobs for Students at the Royal Easter show

The Royal Easter Show runs from 14-27 April, 2011 to coincide with School Holidays.
Arizona seek outgoing, reliable, conscientious Year 10 & Year 11 students to vend ice-creams and soft drinks from mobile carts strategically located around The Showground.

There are also positions to work indoors at ARIZONA Steakhouse & Saloon, an American themed venue which serves up to 2000 customers daily over the course of the event. This involves food service, clearing plates, setting tables etc.

The Easter Show is the largest event in the Southern Hemisphere and it is a fun working environment in which students can work hard and be rewarded but also learn valuable life skills as part of a team. Many students who have worked with Arizona in previous years are looking forward to being a part of the team again in 2011.

The students will be well supervised. Lunch is provided and pay is based on a combination of a base hourly rate and a tiered commission structure which pays them for every drink or ice-cream they sell.

This bring to the fore, the best in very individual and there is a friendly competitive spirit which rewards the top selling vendor with a $ 1000 cash bonus at the conclusion of the two weeks event.

Interested parents and students are encouraged to discuss this opportunity further, call:
Peter Hofbauer phone 0438 577 507
Joanne Howarth phone 0419 50 50 20 or joanne@arizona.com.au

Work Experience Program Year 10

The 2011 Year 10 Work Experience Program takes place from Monday 20th June to Friday 24th June.

A package of documents is in the mail to parents and carers. Electronic copies will be available on the careers section of ilearn and JNET. The attached letter explains the documents and processes for arranging work experience. The most important document is the attached ‘St Joseph’s College Workplace Record’ which serves as a contract between all parties. A completed copy of this document should be lodged with the school before work experience takes place in order to activate our insurance cover.

The Work Experience Program is an important step toward career development. Scholarships, employment opportunities, alternate entry, ADFA, GAP year and apprenticeship applications all require students to provide detailed information on any work experience undertaken. Early work experience is particularly important for students intending to apply for medicine, veterinary science and some journalism courses at university.

At St Joseph’s College Year 10 Work Experience is followed early in Term 3 with a structured ‘Career Voyage’ program. This evening workshop program includes completion of a careers workbook and distribution of the government funded ‘Job Guide’ directory and other career publications to the students. The workbook is intended to assist students in subject selection for Years 11 and 12. Details and the dates for this program will be available later in the year.

Should you have any questions please contact the Careers Counsellor, Lorna Charters, by email at lcharters@joeys.org

Dear Year 10 Parents and Carers,

You would have received information on the Allwell Educational Diagnostic Assessment process recently from Mr Mark Williams (Dean of Studies). This series of tests will gauge your son(s) current academic strengths, personal interests, possible career aspirations and areas of study he is interested in pursuing. The aim of this testing procedure is to help provide detailed information on each Year 10 student which can then be used to assist  in the appropriate selection of senior subjects for Years 11-12 and potentail career pathways, and hopefully assist you and your son in this decision making process.

This Wednesday 16th March during Periods 1-5, the boys will sit a series of tests in the Br. Emilian Hall. They will require either a blue or black pen and a calculator. Period 6 will be a normal lesson.

The results of these diagnostic assessment tasks will then be mailed to you in time to assist in the appropriate selection of courses for Year 11. If you do not wish to have your son included in this diagnostic assessment please contact either Mr Lee MacMaster, Director of Teaching and Learning (9816 0945), Mr Mark Williams, Dean of Studies (9816 0888), or myself (9816 0889) as soon as possible.

Regards,

Fergus

Newsletter 28 Feb 2011

Posted by: | March 10, 2011 | No Comment |

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope you enjoyed the Christmas and New Year break with family and friends. A special welcome also to the parents of the fifteen new boys that have joined the form this term. I look forward to working with you all again this year as the students’ Year 10 Academic Co-ordinator.

The new boys are:

New Boys 28 Feb

Year 10 News Blog:

I am currently in the process of preparing this Year 10 News blog which will be updated each week/fortnight as news items become available. It will allow  students, parents and/or guardians the opportunity to have more regular access to information pertinent to the form throughout the term, especially access to relevant documents such as Board of Studies School Certificate information, Assessment Calendars/Handbooks etc.

This year is certainly a challenging year ahead for the Year 10 boys as they work towards completing the various requirements of the Stage 5 Academic program and ultimately their School Certificate examinations held in Term 4. Students need to be focussed in class and apply themselves rigorously to their studies throughout each day, as well as utilising their evening study time efficiently. It is an opportunity for them to “strive for better things”.

NSW Board of Studies (School Certificate – 2011):

Last week I entered online, all of our Year 10 students and Year 9 Accelerated Mathematics students into their School Certificate courses at the Board of Studies. A BOS ID number has been generated for each student which they will use for their SC as well as their HSC examinations. I will get students to check their personal details and courses of study carefully on the ‘Confirmation of Entry’ forms when they are distributed next week.

It is very important that these details are kept up to date. If you have a change of address at any time, please inform me immediately so that I can update this data at the Board of Studies.

Please refer to the NSW Board of Studies website below for further information on the 2011 School Certificate. On the left hand side of the home page, there is a section for parents.

Laptop roll-out:

Laptop orientation

The process of introducing Apple Macbook laptops for all Year 10 students in 2011 seems to have gone well. Thanks must go to Mr Gary Evans (Head of I.T.) and his staff, as well as Ms Thea van Os (ICT: Teaching and Learning Integrator) for the extensive work in getting laptops ready for distribution and developing a very efficient and well-run orientation program for students.

The majority of boys have started to utilise the laptops appropriately during lessons and evening study although a few minor technical issues with a small number of boys are currently being addressed by the I.T department.

In 2011, the College will begin implementing a 1:1 Learning Program which will enable students to have their own personal laptop for use in all learning situations, whether it be for use in class, other College learning areas, boarding or home. This move towards a 1:1 learning model fosters an environment that supports students to develop skills in areas such as:

• critical thinking

• student centred learning practice

• collaborative work practices

• learning to share in ethical ways

• shared knowledge construction

• problem solving

Contemporary or 21st century learning is centred on the notion that students take control of their own learning and become knowledge and content creators in order to understand the often challenging and deep concepts that they encounter in their academic life.

The 1:1 learning environment at the College will support the development of these contemporary learning concepts. Students will learn through the iLearn online portal and make effective use of the laptops where they are able to access and engage with their learning Anywhere, Anytime.

The 1:1 Learning Program will also encourage boys to seek the links not only between their subjects, but also from year to year, building on what they have learned and gaining a richer and deeper understanding of the subjects they are studying, themselves and the world around them.

(excerpt from the ‘1:1 Learning Brochure’ sent to Parents in December 2010)

The 9th of February was Safer Internet Day. This focus day has the support of the Australian Government through ACMA and aims to raise awareness of internet safety for everyone. For your information, a range of excellent cyber safety resources and more information can be found at: http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/SID%202011.aspx

Br. Anthony will speak to the form during this week’s division meeting (Wk5) about matters associated with cyber-bullying. I also intend organising a screening of “Best Enemies” to the form, which presents students with real scenarios of cyber-bullying and other issues including online privacy. It is a proactive film aimed at preventing negative behaviour by showing the consequences of certain actions.

The following 24 boys also received Study Effort Awards at the end of Term 4 for consistent application in class, consistent completion of set tasks/homework, punctuality and preparation for class and consistent engagement in class. Each teacher nominated 3 students in each class: Congratulations to the following boys:

study_effort_28feb

This year, there will be a weekly ‘Academic Co-ordinator’s Award’ presented to approx.4-5 boys during Thursday morning’s division meeting. It is an encouragement award system which will recognise boys who may not quite get the nominations for a study effort award but who have worked very hard to improve throughout the term, especially those students with specific learning needs who struggle with their academic work. This award program will start next week.

Evening Study:

Last year the school introduced a new computer software program linked to the school database, which now allows each boarding staff to check the boys’ attendance during each session via desktop computer using a dropdown menu and an organised seating plan for each study room. Apologies for the delay in setting up this program this term. There were a few I.T issues that had to be addressed before it could operate effectively.

For parents new to this format, each boarding supervisor will check the attendance during both sessions and towards the end of the evening or in the case of dayboys leaving at 8.00pm, issue a grade for their application/behaviour during study. Starting on Friday (4/3) at approx. 9.30pm all Year 10 parents and carers will receive an email with the allocated grades for your son for the whole week, which also includes the email address of the boarding supervisor that has issued the grade. If you have any concerns, you can contact them directly to receive more feedback on your son’s study habits that evening (hopefully all positive!).

The email will look something like this:

Dear Mr Stewart,

Your son Lachlan’s evening study results can be found below.

Regards,

Evening Study Coordinator

If you have any questions about this email, please contact your son’s evening study supervisor via his/her email address found in the result table.

The range of grades/entries from the Year 10 supervisors may include the following:

–    Night class                   –    Day boy

–     Excellent                     –    Infirmary

–     Good                            –  No study (cancelled)

–     Satisfactory                 –    Approved leave

–     Not working

–     Causing disruption

–     Unexplained absence

–     School function

–     Colo

As an academic co-ordinator, I am able to target specific students by ‘tagging’ their photo (seating plan) and a red band will show above the student’s photo. The supervisor will know that this student must have specific attention given to them (i.e. to check their diary entries, application in study etc. through a message box below their picture). We have developed a very good system that will provide you with more regular, ongoing feedback, especially the parents from rural regions. It will also give the boys greater incentive to apply themselves more effectively during their evening study time!

All students study under the same set of expectations. The primary function of homework and study is to consolidate the knowledge, skills and concepts introduced in class, to test understanding and extend their reading and research of the subject area.

The aim of study is to:

  •
    • complete all homework and assignments
    • revise (go over work that boys learnt in class)
    • prepare for exams
    • help boys to get the best possible result in their subjects.

I have continually stressed the need to use their diaries correctly (making sure they record the homework set in each class each day of the week), as well as transferring the details of various assessment tasks due throughout the term into their diaries.

For your information, the duration of Year 10 Evening Study is as follows:

Session 1 – (6.30pm-8.00pm)

Study break – (8.00pm-8.15pm)

Session 2 – (8.15pm-9.00pm)

The Head of Mathematics (Mr Greg Thompson), has introduced a Student Peer Tutoring Program in which a large number of Year 12 boys have offered to help students in other year groups with their Mathematics. A roster has been created where 5 senior students assist boys every Friday mornings at 8.10am in Room 211. We encourage any Year 10 boy that requires extra assistance to attend these sessions.

The Mathematics department has also recently developed an “information page” designed for parents. On this site you will find all the details about upcoming assessments tasks, teachers emails and contact details and general information regarding the course your son is studying for Mathematics. This page will be regularly updated with the latest news and information. Please find a link to the site below:

http://blogs.joeys.org/maths2011

Year 10 Assessment Calendar / Handbook:

A copy of the Year 10 Term 1 Assessment Calendar has been issued to all Year 10 boys with instructions to transfer the task due into their diaries. Parents can now access these documents via the Parent Portal. A link will also be placed on the Year 10 News blog site for your reference.

I appreciate the contact that I’ve had from many parents so far this term (either by email or phone call). There have been a number of meetings arranged with parents over the last three weeks to discuss various academic issues.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me at any stage if you have any concerns or queries regarding your son’s progress. If you would like information on how your son is performing in a particular subject, you can always contact your son’s teachers directly via their Joeys email address.

Best wishes,

Fergus
