Dear students of the Class of 2011, Parents and Carers,

I hope that these post-school weeks have been enjoyable and that you are all in good health. We are all eagerly awaiting the HSC results and ATARS that will be released in a little over a week.

I have included in this blog three important notices from Mr MacMaster, Director of Teaching and Learning that relate to your results. Please read them carefully.

I wish you all the very best in receiving your results as well as your offers of university placements in January. I also hope that you have a safe and enjoyable Christmas with your families.

Year 12 Boarding News. Week 3, Term 4, 2011

Dear Year 12 parents,

It was good to see so many of the Year 12 mothers at the Farewell Mass last week. Thank you especially to Hilary Keighley for her reflection which all enjoyed hearing.

The boys have been very cooperative while studying for the exams in the dorms and completing them in the Hall. They are all at different stages of course but most are more than half way through now. Thanks to all parents who have kept me informed about the comings and goings of their sons. This has been very helpful and I urge you to keep this communication up.

I have emailed what needs to happen on the boys’ final day here and ask you to consult that carefully. The Year 12s all have a copy of this. It is important that you know their movements and that cars are often not a good idea on that day. We are very conscious of them being safe even though they are naturally excited.
A few reminders:

1. Clothing Pool items can be left outside my office
2. The Year 12 DVDs that have been ordered will be distributed from next week. For boys who have finished, these will be sent in the post.
3. Sports photos will be sent home by Melba Studios in the next month.
4. When boys return from leave can they be reminded to return properly groomed. We have some problems with unshaven Year 12s which sets a bad example for the younger boys at the school.

Thanks again

Pat

Year 12 Academic News. Week 3, Term 4, 2011

Dear Students, Parents and Carers,

We are now half way through the HSC examination period and already, quite a few students have already finished and entered the big wide world. All students are to be congratulated on their cooperation and excellent conduct during the examinations. It makes a big difference to all concerned when things flow easily and distractions do not interrupt our concentration. The externally appointed examination supervisors have been very pleased with all of our candidates in the exam room and impressed by the effort they are putting in to writing the exams.

It seems that some exam papers have been difficult this year and that is something out of everyone’s control. One benefit of difficult examinations is that they differentiate between students who have done the hard yards all year and those who haven’t. I have asked some teachers for comments on their respective HSC examination papers are here are a few comments:

Mr Bentley, Head of English comments on the English Advanced and Standard papers:

English (Standard and Advanced)

Paper 1 – Area of Study (AOS)
The response from our students this year to the AOS English paper was quite positive. All three sections of the paper had a strong thematic focus on place which many students were able to identify and assisted them with analysis of the material. Questions for the paper followed a similar pattern to that of recent years. Section II was quite similar in focus to the CSSA Trial paper completed by students at the College.

English (Standard) Paper 2 – Modules
This was a traditional paper in the sense that it required students to respond to all three sections of the paper in the form of essays. The questions were fair in what they asked of students and mapped well into the focus of school assessment tasks during the past year and the Trial Examination as well. The question for the final section of the paper had a very similar focus to that College’s assessment task held early in Term 3.

English (Advanced) Paper 2 – Modules
This was a reasonably rigorous paper with a strong focus on students demonstrating a detailed knowledge of their prescribed texts and topics. The question for Section II of the paper was quite specific. It required students to demonstrate, via a printed extract from the closing section of their text, their knowledge of both the extract as well as broader ideas in their set text. The last time this type of question was asked was in 2007. While challenging, it was a fair paper.

Head of mathematics, Mr Thompson, says:

General Mathematics:

A straight forward standard exam, no real questions from left field and less diagrams and graphs than last year. Comments from the boys were that they were happy with the paper.

Mathematics

A number of questions involved preliminary concepts as well as Component B (Applications of reasoning) type questions. This exam was not a “typical” exam which in the past for 2 unit has become predictable. A deeper knowledge of basic concepts were examined.

Ext 1

This paper received a lot of press (SMH in particular) for being “cruel and difficult”. I found the first 4 questions to be fairly predictable and our students should have been well prepared for this. Question 5 was a difficult one and hence the press articles. I then found Question 6 and 7 to be a similar standard to past years.

Ext 2

Mrs Sweeting has looked at this paper and felt it was weighted more towards Component B type questions (Applications of reasoning). Interestingly, from 2012 the weighting of Component A and Component B type questions in assessments will change so that more Component B type questions will be assessed (50% each). Below I will include a definition of the two types (styles) of questions.

Component A
Use of concepts, skills and techniques to solve mathematical problems and interpret practical situations

Component B
Application of reasoning and communication in appropriate forms to construct mathematical arguments and to interpret and use mathematical models

Mr Wallace, Head of Economics, Business Studies and Legal Studies commented on the Business Studies Examination as follows:

Business Studies was excellent paper and all associated teachers couldn’t fault it. There was nothing controversial and judging by the demeanour of the students at the end of the exam all of them were really happy and are confident that they will do well. The students were particularly pleased with the multiple choice questions and commented favourably on the essay questions.

In Drama, Mr O’Shea said:

The HSC Drama examination was a fair and accessible question for our students. The Australian section presented a photograph of a stage and asked how the ideas and images in the plays the boys had studied might be presented in the theatre space. The Approaches to Acting section asked how the practitioners studied explore the connection between mind and body. Both questions require theoretical and experiential knowledge of the type which we directly explored in class, workshops, excursions and in revision…there should have been no surprises and indeed the questions should have offered scope for detailed and relevant reflection on the learning experience in Drama during their HSC year.

Mr Halsted’s comments on Ancient History:

The Paper, in terms of the options we do, was the “trickiest” I have experienced in 10 years! The Core Study was good. The 10 marker on Pompeii, which was about challenges facing conservation in Pompeii, was directly on a talk given in late Term III by Jaye Mackenzie-Clark to our boys.
However in the societies there were some very picky questions and the term “nature” popped up eg. Discuss the nature of Cleopatra’s relationship with Rome.

More reports as they come to hand.

Please keep checking your emails and this blog for important Careers and university admissions information right up to the end of January.

Mark Fenech

Year 12 Boarding News, Week 9, Term 3, 2011

Dear Year 12 parents,

I know that the boys are looking forward to the graduation program next week and I realise that you are ready to join them in this important period of their lives. The Headmaster has sent all families a letter about the coming week. If you did not receive this, please let me know and I will send one to you. Please take time to go through this with your son as we want them to have a really enjoyable and memorable graduation program. The Year 12s have been made well aware what the College’s expectations are at this time.

Tomorrow we have the GPS athletics at Homebush and we wish all those athletes the very best as they represent the school for the last time. The Year 12 buses leave from Mark Street gates at 8.30am and we will return about 4pm. Dinner is at 5.30 and this will be followed by the Rally at 6.15pm. Those boys leaving may depart after the completion of the Rally at about 7pm.

As many of you are aware, the HSC examinations begin on Monday 17th October with Business Studies. All boys will be doing the English Paper One on Tuesday 18th October. Term 3 officially begins on the previous Tuesday 11th October. It is our expectation that Year 12 boarders return on the evening of Monday 10th October by 8pm and that day students return the following morning by 8.15am. This first week back will provide the boys an opportunity to take part in a HSC preparation program with STUVAC workshops being run by teachers in their normal timetabled periods. Normal classes will not operate but there will be organised sessions from the Year 12 teachers. Mark Fenech will provide the details of this program and the boys will receive this during next week.

Some other aspects of this first week back:

• If your son is not attending this week, then you will need to send a request to me about this. Please speak to him about what will work best for him. As you can appreciate we cannot tolerate boys who are going to stop others from working.
• All boarding students should be at the College by 8pm on the night before each exam.
• The first week back will provide opportunities for boys to see their teachers in the normal timetabled period
• There will be the chance to do peer tutoring with each other
• There will be organised and supervised study during the day and the evening
• There will be recreation time when the gym and pool will be opened and supervised.
• Boys will need to have wear their uniform
• Attendance at meals will be compulsory unless permission is sought and granted
• It will be a lot smoother for all if your son was to attend for the whole week or not at all.
• The procedures regarding the use of cars at this time are the same as always. Permission must be sought from Br Anthony.
• There will be more details about the final check off for Year 12 next term.

I hope all of this is clear and please do not hesitate to contact me if there are questions. I look forward to seeing you next week.

Pat

Year 12 Academic News Week 9, Term 3, 2011

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are approaching a very exciting part of the year for Year 12 students. Next week is our final week and there is great anticipation as the last day of classes approaches, followed by the Graduation Assembly and Morning Tea, the Year 12 Formal and then our Graduation Mass and Prize Giving. The boys have every right to be very excited.

We will be continuing classes right to the very end, with the final lesson being English in Period 1 on Thursday morning. Needless to say, I expect every student to be at that class as we will not have time for distractions on what will be a very busy day.

Year 12 Placings and Prizes

Pat and I posted a list of prize winners on the Year 12 notice boards this week. I will not spoil the surprise for some parents as these will be announced more formally at the Graduation Dinner. However, my sincere congratulations to those students who have been placed first in their courses. This achievement represents sustained effort at an excellent level.

The Archbishop’s Award.

Tom Kennedy receiving the Archbishop's Award from Archbishop Cardinal Pell. Tom is accompanied by his family.

Recently, Thomas Kennedy was awarded the presigious Archbishop’s Award for 2011. This is an important award made to students who actively life out their Faith for the betterment of their school communities. Anthony Baker, a fellow student, read out the following citation at Tom’s presentation:

“In all aspects of his life at St Joseph’s , Thomas Kennedy embodies the College motto, In Meliora Contende – Strive for Better Things. His selfless manner in always being available to lend a hand and to do it with a smile, makes him an exceptional role model for all students. This is evidenced through his commitment to solidarity, including visiting Bougainville in 2010, his religious leadership as a College Acolyte and the manner in which he supports younger students, especially those in the boarding community . Tom’s deep personal faith is witnessed in his respect for others making him a worthy recipient of the Archbisop’s Award.”

It was wonderful that Tom Kennedy was able to be joined by his proud family, father Bernard, mother Lee and sisters Anna (in uniform) and Georgina. Our very sincere congratulations to Tom and the Kennedy family on this outstanding achievement.

I am planning to send out a spreedsheet of revision lessons that teachers will run in Week 1 of Term 4. As Pat has said above, I expect all students to be here for that week unless the College has suggested to some, as we in fact will, that they are not to study at the College.

I look forward to seeing you all this week, together with our Year 12 teachers at our celebrations for your sons.

Best wishes,

Mark Fenech

Year 12 Boarding News. Week 8, Term 3, 2011
Dear Year 12 parents,

This Sunday night at Mass we have Cardinal Pell as the special guest celebrant. For all boys coming back in that night, could they please be back by 8pm so that they are on time for Mass to start at 8.15pm in the Chapel? There was singing practice for this the other day and the Year 12s led this very well.
Br Anthony spoke to the year group on Tuesday morning about their final couple of weeks here. He made it clear that the normal rules apply right up until the end. He also asked for a positive contribution to be made. We are certainly seeing that from the athletes who are training hard and competing well in the lead up to the GPS Carnival. A reminder that this Carnival and the rally that follows on Saturday 17th September are compulsory events. The bus to the Athletics will leave about 8.30am which may impact on those considering overnight requests next weekend. Any further overnight requests for this weekend are needed today please.
We congratulate George Atkin on his selection in the Combined GPS debating team having completed the competition last Friday evening. There will be a chance to commend many more boys on the graduation evening at the Prize Giving. Thank you for the replies to the graduation events which have allowed time to organise these so that they can be memorable and enjoyable for you and the boys.
The Year 12s completed their reference applications on Wednesday. This helps us write the College reference which will be sent home following the HSC exams. Just glancing through these reminded me of how much a lot of the boys have achieved and contributed during their time here. I reminded the boys that at times references are withheld if there have been problems with the boy’s behaviour. This becomes very inconvenient as so many Universities, Colleges and employers require a formal school reference these days.

Pat

Year 12 Boarding News. Week 6, Term 3, 2011
Dear Year 12 parents,

Thanks to all the dads who came to the breakfast this morning. The boys really appreciated your presence and despite the cool temperature, I think all enjoyed the relaxed time together. Even though they mightn’t say it too often, the boys really appreciate all you have done for them to get them this far.
The end of term is fast approaching and so are the graduation events. I have again attached the Reply Sheet for those who have not RSVPed as yet. If your son does not know exactly who he’s Formal partner is yet, just put TBA in that section of the form. Obviously with less thanthree weeks to go this is a priority however!
We wish the debaters all the best for their final round of the competition tonight against Scots. It is good to see that quite a few Year 12s are keen to go to support them. This sort of support is also needed at the Athletics carnival next Saturday (10th September). Joeys is hosting this event at Blacktown and at least 15 Year 12s are required to help it run on the day. This is an opportunity for those who are not in the athletics squad to contribute in their final couple of weeks at school. I will be encouraging this but your prompting would certainly be appreciated too.
If there are any further overnight requests for this weekend, could they be sent today please? Sunday return time is by 9pm this weekend because of Father’s Day. Mass will be at 6.30 on Saturday night. I hope all the fathers enjoy their day on Sunday- breakfast in bed, the Sunday papers read in peace, no taxi service needed by the family for one day, no requests for money……well it’s nice to dream…

All the best

Pat

Year 12 Academic News. Week 6, Term 3, 2011

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week’s blog entry from me is quite brief because I would prefer to send an email to parents/carers about some academic matters that I would rather not publish in such a public way as our Blog.

Trial HSC Examination Reports

By now, most parents and carers would have received their son’s Trial HSC Examination Report in the mail. Should this not be the case, I ask that you contact me as soon as possible so that I can send another one out to you. The report represents only the performance in the recent written examination as well as the avage exam performance and your son’s ranking against others doing that same exam. I am now working with teachers and Heads of Departments to produce a final HSC Assessment Ranking report which will be posted in the last week of term.

STUVAC

With HSC examinations commencing on Monday 17th October and students returning to the College on Monday night 10th October, Year 12 are presented with a valuable opportunity to continue to engage with their teachers right up until the exmas start. Many staff memebrs have expressed a keen interest in conducting subject-specific workshops and generic workshops on a whole range of topics during that week of STUVAC. I hope to be able to publish an outline of these workshops on the blog before the end of term.

Graduation and the Formal will be exciting distractions that will led us all into the holiday period. Students should already be setting a holiday study program for after these celebratory events so that they can get their minds back on the job of studying during the holidays. There are many study seminars being held in a variety of locations that students may wish to take advantage of and these range from large revision sessions held at the major universities to programs being run by municipal councils and local libraries. I will continue to provide links as they become available but I encourage parents and students to investigate study activities in their local areas by searching council websites and visiting their public libraries. Mr Matt Bentley, our Head of English has alerted me to one such seminar at Ryde Municipal Library which I have attached a flyer to below.

Student Art Exhibition

Last Friday evening, our Year 12 Visual Arts students showcased their HSC Bodies of Work in our annual Student Art Exhibition. The event was very well attended and was opened by artist, Craig Waddell who spent two weeks at the College earlier in the year as our inaugural Artist in Residence. The Headmaster, Mr Tarlinton, spoke of the diversity of learning and experience that the exhibition demonstrates in the artworks of our students. He also congratulated Ms Michelle Markuse, Acting Head of Art and her staff for the work involved in putting on the exhbition and in supporting the creativity of all of our art students at Joeys. At the Year 12 level, it is always rewarding to see students and their families in awe at the sophistication of material and conceptual practices on display. Clearly, boys produce amazing artworks that they could not have even imagined doing 12 months ago. Special congratulations must go to Dominic Egan whose photograph was selected for the exhibition invitation and to Peter Distapan (video installation) and Jack Karikios (digital media installation) whose works were chosen by Craig Waddell to share the senior art prize.

Year 12 Careers News. Week 6, Term 3, 2011.

This week was the final week for College-led instruction to registering on-line at UAC for university entry in 2011. Students are still able to access this online entry themselves.

UAC application fees

Applying to university in NSW through UAC incurs a $26 fee. There is no alternative but to pay this fee as (in general) school leavers cannot apply to university directly. At Joeys we try to get all students registered before end September as the fee increases from $26 to $116 on 1 October and thereafter to $133 and @143 at the end of each month.

This fee can be paid using a credit card on-line when students apply to UAC. The safer option is to print an invoice and then pay at any Post Office. This is what students are encouraged to do when registering with UAC with Mrs Charters. Students are asked to save an electronic copy of the invoice and email it home.

Information on the UAC fees can be found at:
http://www.uac.edu.au/undergraduate/fees/uac-charges.shtml and
http://www.uac.edu.au/undergraduate/faq/applications.shtml
An excerpt from the UAC web site reads as follows:
• What are the processing charges and payment options?

The processing charge is $26 for Year 12 applicants and $56 for non-Year 12 applicants. Late fees apply after Friday 30 September 2011.

The processing charge is not refundable under any circumstances and you must keep a record of the date and time of your payment.

Note: If you do not pay the processing charge your application will not be processed and you will not be made an offer.
When you use Apply you’ll be instructed on how to pay using:

o a credit card (MasterCard or Visa only)
o BPay
o Australia Post
o PayPal – allows you to transfer money securely from your nominated bank account to UAC.

If you choose to use PayPal, and you don’t have a PayPal account, you’ll need to set up your account at least 10 days before you submit your application.
Read fees for more information on the costs of study, UAC charges and financial assistance for applicants.

Year 12 Boarding News. Week 5, Term 3, 2011

Dear Year 12 parents,

With the last Saturday of winter sport coming up on Saturday I am sure that the Year 12s want to finish on a high. We have the sports rally in the Hall at 6.30pm and all boys need to be at this in their Blues. Those leaving will be able to do so from 7.30pm. Winter sports photos will take place next Wednesday afternoon after school. I have been encouraging those boys who are talented and/or keen athletes to train with the College Athletic squad for the GPS carnival. This starts next Tuesday and it is important that these Year 12s are willing to be involved. If your son is in this category, please encourage him to contribute to the school in one last sport.
Lorna Charters has run two sessions for boys who wish to put their UAC preferences in. It is important for them to take up this opportunity so that they are registered. The boys need their UAC Pin which was sent to their home address, so your help with this is much appreciated. These initial preferences can be changed. It is just important that they are in the system.

We had Kelly Country come on Wednesday and they fitted a number of boys with formal suits. Another company is coming next Wednesday after school. These give the opportunity for the boys to order a suit and possibly a shirt and tie for the Formal. I have attached the reply sheet for the end of term events and again ask that you attend to this as soon as possible to allow the planning to go smoothly.

A reminder about the Year 12 Father’s day breakfast on 2nd September at 7.30am at the pool BBQ: Fathers who can attend just need to simply email me with that reply.

Mark and I have congratulated the boys on their cooperation throughout the trial exam period. I have also appreciated their leadership at the games at Riverview last Saturday and the support that many of them gave the debaters last Friday night. It is evident that many have really stepped up to the mark recently.

The next stage of this term is one which some struggle with as the trial exams are over and they have finished their sport. It is crucial that Year 12 still:

• Keep the rules and maintain respect for staff and each other
• Contribute by providing a good example with their punctuality, uniform and general approach around the school.
• Work to improve their performances in every class and in each subject.

The boys are aware of this but we have already had some who have been a negative influence. As I told the boys, I do not want to be contacting parents in these last weeks of school because a Year 12 student thinks that this is a time to ”muck up” or to ignore the rules of the school. It should be a very happy time with their friends and the staff as they graduate from such a fine school. Your reinforcement of this message is very much appreciated.

Best wishes,
Pat

Year 12 Academic News. Week 5, Term 3, 2011

Dear Students, Parents and Carers,

For many of our senior students, this week has been a roller coaster of emotions as exam papers have been handed back and the realisation that the finish line is still a short sprint away. It is true to say that some students have found disappointment hard to take but I tried to reassure all of our year 12 boys when we met briefly on Wednesday that returning to a disciplined routine will bring better results in the HSC. Pat and I have seen hard work pay off many times before and, as much as they may like to think they are different, these boys are much the same as others who have gone before them.

Trial HSC exams are typically the most difficult exams that students will do at school. They are meant to expose areas of weakness that need to be worked on in the remaining 7 or 8 weeks before the real thing happens. They are meant to push students right to the end and remind them that “it’s not quite over yet.” And it’s tough, because everything else that we are doing at the moment whispers in our ear that we are at the end – the end of lessons, the end of sport, graduation, formals, schoolies. It is hard to keep the eyes on the prize with all these ‘final’ things happening around us every week. But we simply have to. Giving up is not an option so let’s get on with it.

I wrote to teachers today and emphasised 5 foundational points to get us through to a positive end. Some may be expecting complex strategies or hi-tech approaches. In fact these five things are nothing new.
• Boys need to be writing notes in their books during classes
• They need to be getting written homework every night, even over the weekend.
• Boys need to attend ALL classes.
• We will not tolerate any disruption in class, lateness, or unpreparedness.
• Teachers will try to ensure that they are able to teach every class or cover their classes within their faculty so that students are kept on task.

I was disappointed to hear that some parents felt that their son was exhausted by the exams and needed a break. This is not helpful at all. Let’s face it, we are not doing hard labour here… we are studying in very comfortable and supportive facilities with very experienced teachers giving assistance to these students. Pat Rodgers, Craig Attwater and I spend hours each week consoling students and talking them through disappointments and giving them encouragement and we will continue to do this until the very last exam is over.

Our Careers Advisor, Mrs Lorna Charters, has commenced the induction of our Year 12 students in the process of registering for university entry on-line with the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC). She has also been meeting with many students each day to discuss career paths and scholarship applications.

Teachers are working hard writing the Trial HSC Report. This will report only on the written Trial examination and will have a mark, exam average and ranking along with a comment. This report will be posted during the first week in September. Another report will be sent at the end of term that will have a final Assessment Ranking and outcome grades for the whole course. Schools are not permitted to publish final Assessment Marks to students as these will be moderated by the performance of our students in each HSC examination.

I am constantly being approached by organisations offering tutoring to students doing the HSC. It is a real minefield in what remains an unregulated and expensive area. However, many organisations are very good and students are happy to use them. One organisation that has contacted me recently is Liberation Learning. They have a special deal for our students in a program of presenations planned for late September and early October. They say:

The Seminar Timetable
The HSC Results Seminars will run on weekends in September and early October of 2011:

• A full day intensive training day for the subject within a guided learning environment (6 workshop-seminar hours)

Year 12 Boarding News. Week 4, Term 3, 20112

Dear Year 12 parents,

The Trial exams are just about done and the boys have been commended on how cooperative they have been in the exams and in the dorms during this stressful period. There are a handful of students who will complete their exams on Monday but for all others classes will recommence on that day. Could I please encourage you to ensure that your son is here on Monday and ready to go for this post exam period? For some this can be an anti- climax after the exams, but there are papers to get back, more content to cover in some courses, revision and major works to be completed.

With the Year 12 graduation creeping up on us all, much preparation is going on to help make this a special time for the boys and their families. Could I remind you to complete and return the Year 12 End of Year Function Reply Sheet – RSVP to Rose Unwin by 2 September 2011?
The Form can be either faxed to 9816 0877, emailed to runwin@joeys.org or posted to the attention of Rose Unwin, St Joseph’s College, Locked Bag 509, Gladesville NSW 1675.
Dietary requirements should be noted on the Reply Sheet or emailed direct to Rose Unwin.

Also we have the Year 12 Father’s Day breakfast on Friday 2 September at 7.30am at the pool BBQ. Thanks to those who have replied to this but I have had very few at this stage. A simple email to say that you are coming is all that is required.

On Friday evening the GPS Debating competition continues at home against Riverview. The 1sts including Year 12s George Atkin and Josh Klarica, had a fine win against the undefeated Sydney High last Friday. The smiles on their faces and their supporters were great to see.

As you are aware, this weekend’s sport is slightly different to normal. Attached is the playing schedule and below is the movement to Riverview. The full fixture list will be on the College website. Boys who played morning games may leave after they have checked off with me after the 1st XV match. For boys who have leave to return on Saturday morning this will mean that they must be at Mark Street in time for their bus. If this will be too difficult, please consider returning your son on Friday night.

Year 12 Academic News. Week 4, Term 3, 2011

Dear Students, Parents and Carers,

I have just returned to my office after visiting the Hall where our HSC Leagal Studies students were finishing off their Trial exam. I commented to them that I have been exceptionally pleased by the serious and well organised way that all of our students have approached each of their exams. I told them also that I can’t remember a Year 12 group that I have supervised in the past being as good as this – I have not had to chase after one student to be on time for an exam; I have not seen anyone run back to their room because they forgot a piece of equipment; the attention to instructions in the exam room has been first class and it is especially pleasing to see everyone giving it a real go by writing right up to the final minute of the exam. Teachers who have been allocated to supervise these exams have commented to me in similar ways.

What’s next?

With the exception of those with an exam on Monday, all other Year 12 students will return to their normal timetable of scheduled lessons. I encourage boys to take the excellence on display over the exam period into their classroom activities for the remainder of the term. This is crucial. Students should take heart from their Trial HSC performances and not despair. Trials are intended to be difficult. They are meant to expose any weaknesses so that they can be fixed. We wouldn’t pick our sporting teams by having easy trials. Let’s ramp it up until the end.

Teachers will be returning Trial exam papers to students in their classes over the next week. They will also be continuing with course work in many subjects. The Trials have given teachers an acute awareness of areas that may need tighter focus or reinforcement. Students should go out of their way in these final weeks to organise some 1:1 time with their teacher to go over their exam responses. A lot can be achieved in the 8 weeks before the HSC examinations commence.

There is a lot of administrative work that takes place after the Trial examinations as our courses move to conclusion and final HSC Assessment Marks are resolved. Heads of Departments will finalise assessment marks for each student in their courses reviewing all of those instances where estimate marks had to be given due to illness or misadventure. Heads of Departments will provide me with a final list of Assessment Marks and these will be sent to the Board of Studies on-line. Students will be made aware of their rankings in each subject but not their assessment mark. This is because or performance in the actual HSC examination will modify that assessment mark. 50% of a student’s HSC exam mark and 50% his Modified Assessment Mark will combine to be their HSC result in each course.

I wish those of our language students who have their HSC speaking exams on over the next few weeks all the very best. These exams are completed away from the College on Saturdays and this is a big demand on those students. Similarly, I wish our Music and Drama students well in their HSC performances which are coming up very soon at the College.

I wish you all a happy and safe weekend.

Best wishes,

Mark Fenech

Year 12 Boarding News. Week 3, Term 3, 2011

Dear Year 12 parents,

With the boys in the middle of their exams, I just wish to reiterate that there is no compulsory attendance at the 1st XV rugby tomorrow. Boys may leave after completing their sports commitments. There are a number of boys planning overnight leave, so if a request has not been sent in, could that be done today please?

Jazz on the Lawn will be on again on Sunday 14 August following the Family Mass. Please find details for this great event in the link below:
http://www.joeys.org/newspublicationsevents/news/JazzontheLawn.cfm
The Headmaster has asked that his letter from the start of the year be sent out again. In particular he has asked that the section on holiday plans be read carefully. This document can be seen below.

On Tuesday evening, we have the census for all students sleeping at the College that night.

• All boys who sleep at the College on Tuesday night must, by law, complete their form here at the College.
• Boys who sleep at home that evening should be included in their household Census – even if they are at school while the boarders are completing the forms.

I am sure that you would appreciate that the completion of the Census material is a large task here and we will certainly be seeking the cooperation of the boys.

Thanks

Pat

Year 12 Academic News. Week 3, Term 3, 2011.

Dear Students, Parents and Carers,

I have been very, very pleased with the way that Year 12 has approached their Trial Examinations this week in the Hall. Their cooperation and application have been first class and it has made for a smooth and stress-reduced operation for all those concerned. Students have arrived on time and have written for the whole of the allocated time for every exam. With the exception of poor Amos Bryant who broke his jaw at rugby last Saturday, we have had full attendance at each examination. I have the very best of hopes that what students are writing in their exam booklets is as impressive as what they have done as far as cooperation and application to these important exams is concerned. Keep up these great efforts boys!

Amendment to last week’s blog.

Unfortunately, I made an error last week in communicating one of the details about the Trial HSC Report. I wrote that practical examinations will be included in the Trial HSC Report along with written exam results and this is not exclusively the case. The correct information should read:

“the report mark, report average and student ranking on this Trial HSC Written Examination Report is based solely on one task – the Trial HSC Written Examination… – in order to achieve consistency in reporting the Trial Written Examination performance across all courses delivered at the HSC level here at the College as well as presenting parents and students at the HSC level with a more summative Final HSC Assessment Report.”

My apologies for the error made last week.

Special gift ideas for that hardworking HSC student

We go out of our way here at St Joseph’s College to provide for all the needs and comfort of those engaged in the trenches of HSC examinations. However, if you are looking for that something special for your hardworking student, here are a few ideas:

* a watch: you wouldn’t believe how many students have no way of telling the time. It is obviously considered a fashion faux pas to wear a time piece at SJC, but you know what, it’s great in exams!!
* a handkerchief!!! Please, please, put one in his pocket this weekend!! They seem to think that handing everything up at the end of exams means the snotty bits of tissues too!!
* a spare pen: yes, a cheap but effective present for those wanting to write right up to that final bell!!!

Obviously, it is never the students’ fault when they don’t have these essentials, so Mums and Dads, get your act together!!

Have a sunny and happy weekend everyone. Hit those maths books hard!

Regards,

Mark Fenech

Year 12 Boarding News Term 3, Week 2, 2011

Dear Year 12 parents,

It’s been great to see the sun this week and the boys have appreciated the chance to get outside a lot more. With the HSC trial period just about to begin I would emphasise that any leave requests during that time should be sent through to me. These will treated on a case by case basis but all boys must fulfil their sporting commitment at training and on Saturdays. We will be having lunch at 12.00 each week day in case lunch leave is planned and as Mark Fenech has communicated it is important that boarders are at school the night before each exam.

At Assembly today a large number of Year 12s were presented and congratulated on stage. The College Musical “Joseph” received great reviews last term and those who gave so much to the performances were recognised for this. Luke Amasi, Harry Coppen, Max Ford, Hamish Mathers, Duen Siauw, Kristian Lojszczyk, Tim Hill, Julian Herrera and Ronald Szeto were all presented with certificates.

Several Year 12s performed outstandingly in the Australian Schools Geography competition. The following received High Distinctions: Andrew North, Nick McMahon, Cameron Booth, Andrew Schwager, Hugh Sterndale-Smith and Joe Carey. Joe was placed in the top 10 students in the whole competition. Joeys were placed 8th overall out of 800 schools that participated nationwide. The top seven schools were all selective high schools.

Our Cross Country senior team was announced and we congratulate Aidan Blair as captain, Josh Klarica, Matt Smith and Josh Parker. We wish them well for the GPS competition races. Josh, Matt and Josh were joined by Dom Egan to receive the gold medals for winning the schools relay race at the recent CIS Cross Country championships.

Finally, Duen, Max and Kristian all played in the Chambers Strings to complete a very packed Assembly in which Year 12 featured heavily.

I will begin handing out the individual and group photos that were ordered last term. I will stress to the boys the importance of these getting home, so if you are here over the weekend it may be worth asking them as they may have their minds on other matters.

On Friday we have the Design and Technology Display evening at 6.30pm in the Hall. The year 12s students have been all working hard to complete their major works in time for this. Parents are very welcome, of course, to view these on the night or on Sunday between 9am and 3pm.

I thoroughly enjoyed the 1sts Debating performance last Friday. George Atkin and Josh Klarica spoke very well against a top class Sydney Grammar side in the first round of the competition. Over the next six Fridays the competition will continue and we wish them all the best.

Everyone should have received information about this term which includes a reply sheet to the graduation and Formal. Thank you to those who have already returned these and could I encourage others to get these back so that planning can go smoothly. If you haven’t received these please let me know.

Can I remind parents that on Saturdays the boys are present at school in the dorms, playing or supporting until after the 1st XV? If you wish to take your son, a brief email is needed to me. All boys should be in the stand by 2pm or watching the end of the 1st football game.

I have been asked to publicise the following two events:

On Friday, 19 August, St Joseph’s College Foundation will celebrate 130 years of Joeys achievements at their “Men of Rugby” dinner, and invites you to get join with Matt Burke, Kurtley Beale and other Wallaby and Waratah legends for a fantastic evening. Hosted by award winning Sky News sports reporter James Bracey, guests will be treated to a three course meal, drinks and entertainment. A live auction of a few very special items will also be conducted on the evening.
Tickets to the dinner are $150 per head. A limited number of Premium Tables (seating nine or ten guests) are also available for $2,000, and will be located in a front of house/premium location and include the option of having a special guest (e.g. Wallaby or Waratah player) seated with your guests for the evening. Individual tickets can also be purchased, and if you indicate your son’s year group we will arrange a table for you.
All proceeds from the evening will go towards supporting the St Joseph’s College Capital Appeal: Realising the Vision.
Tickets can be purchased in two ways:
Online through the Joeys shop
or
Download a booking form
Want more information?
Contact Joanne Wilson (SJC Development Office) on email events@joeys.org or telephone: +61 2 9816 0958.
The City Country Joeys Mothers Luncheon is once again preceding the Joeys Riverview match and will be held on Friday August 12. We would be grateful if you could inform the Year Coordinators and ask them to include the attached invitation with their newsletters/blogs.

The details are:
Friday 12 August, 12-3pm in the Y12 Ref.
Tickets are $45 and are available through www.joeys.org

I am sure many of you would be interested in supporting these.
All the best until next week

Pat

Year 12 Academic News Week 2, Term 3, 2011

Dear Students, Parents and Carers,

As Pat has already covered the procedure relating to requesting leave from the College during the examination period, I will not cover it again here, except to say that every student must honour their Co-Curricular commitments both mid-week and on weekends ahead of any leave.

I concur with Pat’s comments about Year 12 achievements that were recognised at Assembly this week. It gives me great pleasure to see these students achieving in such a broad range of activities and subjects at a time that they are also focussing on Trial examinations. Well done to all those boys and to the staff who work with them. Particular emphasis must be given to the outstanding achievements of Joe Carey in the Australian Geography Competition – Mr Mark Cahill, Head of Geography, told me that Joe placed within the top 10 Geography students throughout Australia. It was especially good to have Br Anthony available at our Form Meeting this week to congratulate students who were awarded Study Effort Awards for Term 2. Br Anthony’s philosophy of ‘mastering the small things’ that is applied to the whole spectrum of activities at SJC to build a positive culture was not lost on our Year 12 students as they ready themselves for the Trial Examinations.
As promised, I have distributed a hard-copy of the examination timetable to all students to keep in their rooms. This is also available on last week’s blog posting.

While some rugby teams will be travelling to Armidale for games next weekend, no Year 12 students will be involved. It is a strong message to our community from the College as to how important these examinations are and that students must sustain a routine of study in order to achieve the marks that they are capable of.

Reports

There will be two mail-outs of academic reports this term. The Trial HSC Report will be posted a week or two after the examinations have finished. This will report on the Trial examinations ONLY (no other assessment tasks are included). Students who do practical subjects will understand that those practical submissions and performances are also regarded as ‘exams’ and the practical components will make up part of the Trial Report Mark. A final Yr 12 Academic Report will be sent at the end of the term which will cover the whole of the HSC course and this will include the final HSC Assessment Ranking. Assessment Marks are not reported to students – only rankings. This is an important condition set down by the Board of Studies.

The Headmaster’s Reference will be sent in November/December and this will comment on the student’s attitude, involvement in activities and general character. It is a very important document that should be included in every student’s portfolio.

Resume’ Builder

Mrs Charters distributed a booklet this week to assist Year 12 students in setting out an efficiently comprehensive and effective resume’. I encourage parents and carers to take an active part in helping their sons to construct this important document. Mrs Charters is also available to give advice on this as well.

Best wishes to all students for their examinations. I encourage all students, carers and parents to contact me if they require any assistance or advice during the examination period.

Mark Fenech
