Cow day

At the end of Term 2 Year 7 participated in what is colloquially called “Cow day”. It is actually for the Technology topic on Agriculture and Food Technologies.

We had a vist from the smart farmer who discussed:

• milk production in Australia
• imports and exports markets for milk
• nutritional needs of their age group and how dairy products satisfy those needs
• discussion of milk hygiene, food safety regulations and milk processing
• analysis of characteristics of dairy products (vitamins and minerals, fats, proteins)
• process of making cheese and butter
• automatic and hand milking a cow
• design, production, marketing and processing of a milk product

A visit from OzHarvest to learn about:

• the problem of food waste and food insecurity – globally and in Australia
• the environmental consequences of food waste
• the impact of food insecurity on people
• tips to fight food waste at home and in your community

Finally the boys had sessions on creating infographics, cybersecurity and ozobots.

The boys had an enjoyable day and had to produce an assessment item which is due soon.
