20 minute recess challenge

IMG_0003Today at recess was the 20 minute recess challenge which was fund raising for the Lenten appeal. As posted previously, during Lent the boys have been raising money for the Marist La Valla School in Cambodia.

The boys brought in a selection of cakes after the Easter weekend that were sold in aid of this worthy cause. Luckily for the boys I think many of the cakes were actually made by their parents rather than the boys themselves. They were certainly delicious!

IMG_1279Year 9 raised $674.84 during recess. Across the school we raised $4,196.90. This money will be added to the total raised during Lent. The total amount raised will be announced very soon.

A big thank you to all the parents who organised the cakes to be sent in to school as well as the parents who assisted during recess. Thanks also to Ms Kelly Oastler who organised the recess challenge.

Competing in maths using Kahoot!

This afternoon Mr Vane-Tempest’s class used Kahoot! which is an online maths competition. The boys in the class compete against each other to answer questions and get the highest score.  Today the boys were solving equations and collecting like terms of algebraic equations.  All the boys in this class did very well in their recent ATB examination.

Easter break arrangements, cake fundraiser, fluvax

Easter arrangements

The last day of school before Easter is tomorrow, 23 March. Assuming the boys all behave themselves (which I’m sure they will!) they should be free to leave by 4pm. Boarders who are travelling will depart early on Thursday morning.

All boarders return by 8pm on Tuesday 29 March. Day students return by 8am on Wednesday 30 March.

Cake Fundraiser

The boys have been raising funds during Lent for La Valla school in Cambodia. Currently their generosity has raised $2,800. Last year this year group had the highest average donation per student, something we hope to replicate this year. As a final boost to the fund raising we are holding a cake sale on Wednesday 30 March at Recess:

  • Cake boxes will be available from Reception from Monday 21 March.
  • All cakes to be delivered on the morning of Wednesday 30 March (first day back to school after the short Easter break).
  • Cakes are delivered to your son’s ref.
  • We are going to encourage the boys to donate $5 for a plate of 3-4 cakes; they can of course donate more!

Many thanks for your support with this.

Fluvax

Boys who have ordered a fluvax injection will receive them at the start of term 2.

I hope you and your families have a safe and happy Easter.

Regards,

Mick

Meg and Thomas Keneally

“Oscar Schindler was a highly imperfect saviour. And as Catholics, don’t we all love stories about the Saviour?”

bb1For our Term 1 Books & Blokes Breakfast we were thrilled to welcome Australian living treasure, Thomas Keneally, author of over fifty books, and his daughter, Meg Keneally, who co-authored his latest novel The Soldier’s Curse.
Thomas on writing: Writing is one of the few things I can really do well and I am incredibly lucky to have been able to write for a living. As a school teacher at Homebush I knew nothing and had nothing to tell, but I began to research interesting people and events in history for inspiration.

Meg on writing: I am grateful to have had the opportunity to write and I absolutely loved being a newspaper reporter which helped inspire me to have a go at writing this novel.

BB2Thomas on writing Schindler’s Ark: I am fascinated by the human condition which allowed highly educated people to be brainwashed into following Hitler’s ideology. Hatred between races has always fascinated me. As a child, being Irish and Catholic meant you were hated by many. The idea of hating someone and wanting to exterminate them based on their race is extreme and delusional. I don’t like Parramatta supporters, but I don’t want them exterminated.
When I heard the story of Oscar Schindler I was fascinated. Schindler was a flawed character – “a highly imperfect saviour and as Catholics, don’t we all love the Saviour?”

Meg on researching Australian history for the novel The Soldier’s Curse: I have always had an interest in Australian history. I am particularly interested in the female experience in history, which is often overlooked. I discovered that many female convicts in the early 1800s were utterly powerless, yet went on to become highly successful. The Soldier’s Curse is set in Port Macquarie in the early 1800s which was established as a penal colony for second offenders. The extreme isolation of Port Macquarie and the multi-dimensional characters help to create story tension and make for a great read.

bb3
Our next Books & Blokes Breakfast will be held on Tuesday 24 May where we will welcome Holocaust survivor and Joeys grandfather, Tom Fleming (formerly Fleishman), who will speak about some of his experiences and the writing of his book Lolli’s Apple.

20 Minute recess challenge

Please find a message below from the Director of Mission, Mrs Lesley Maher:

After the tremendous success of the last Recess cake sale (Twenty Minute Challenge) I am sending out a plea for a repeat performance! The boys have been fantastic raising funds for our Lenten Appeal to support La Valla School in Cambodia. As a final boost to the fund raising we would like to hold a cake sale on Wednesday 30 March at Recess. It would be wonderful if the following information could be communicated through the P&F body to the parents in each year group:

  • Cake boxes will be available from Reception from Monday 21 March.
  • All cakes to be delivered on the morning of Wednesday 30 March (first day back to school after the short Easter break).
  • Cakes are delivered to your son’s ref.
  • Yr 7 should deliver their cakes to the Yr8 Ref – a joint sale will take place for Yr7 and Yr8
  • We are going to encourage the boys to donate $5 for a plate of 3-4 cakes; they can of course donate more!

Many thanks for your support with this. I’m sure you appreciate that the best way to the heart of a Joe-boy is through his stomach!

Kind regards,

Lesley

Learning to develop a resilient mind

IMG_0740Today the boys heard from Ms Clare Martin, the College psychologist about some strategies for developing a resilient mind. Luckily from all of the brain dissections which occurred in Science earlier in the term the boys knew all about the different parts of the brain. We learnt about the effects that long term stress can have on the brain and also the body. We discussed how the way we think about things can affect the way that we feel.

Year 9 will continue to learn skills to develop resilient minds throughout the year.

Rowing Head of the River arrangements

Arrangements for the Head of the River at Penrith this Saturday:

7:45am: Buses depart from Mary St for Year 9. All boys travel together on the buses to and from Penrith. Dress is full blues

At the conclusion of the rowing all boys return to the College together on the buses. Boys will eat a late lunch and have some free time on College grounds.

4:30pm: Rowing Rally in the hall, all boys attend. Dress is full blues.

5:30pm (approx.): Rally concludes, boys can depart with parents and carers.

St Joseph’s Day activities

Just a reminder that the St Joseph’s Day activities are on next Monday. All of Year 9 are heading to Jamberoo recreation park for the day.

Boys need to assemble on College C at 7:45am. Dress for the day is casual clothes. Boys can travel to and from school in casual clothes. Boys need to bring towels and a bag. It is recommended that they leave their phones and any valuables at home or in the dorms.

The buses will return at approximately 4:45pm so the boys can depart at 5:00pm.

Day students: I will assume all day students will depart at 5pm regardless of the portal times. If you are happy with this, no need to reply. If you would still like your son to stay later please let me know.

A reminder about clothes labels

Just a reminder that all clothes need to be labelled whether a day student or a boarder. Tonight was laundry night and here is the un-labelled and uncollected clothes just from this week. Without names this cannot be returned to its owners. Most will not be claimed by anyone so it ends up donated to charity or in the Joeys second hand clothing store. This is just from this week.
