Year 9 PDM Excursion

Current exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art and Art Gallery of NSW highlighted the diversity in practice of video art and photography. The boys were challenged to interpret the ideas and context of photographed imagery and time-based concepts. Their curiosity and engagement with the works showed a developing maturity of the boys as artists and photographers.

Bonfire

img_0446After the Mass and discussions on Saturday evenings, the boys and fathers came together to sit around a massive bonfire. If you look carefully at the size of the people in the photos of the bonfire, you might get an idea of the size of the flames!

Mass and meeting

img_0445On Saturday evening the camp came together for Mass said by Father Gavin in a beautiful outdoor setting. This was followed by dinner then the boys and their fathers separated for some discussions on fathers and their relationships with their sons.

Father son camp

img_0432I am pleased to report that all fathers and their sons have returned from the Father Son weekend at Colo safely. Some of the boys have their egos a little bruised after their fathers showed them up in the touch football, softball and various other activities, each of which the fathers won convincingly. There were no injuries apart from a sore nose that came from walking into a tree while wearing a pillowcase on the head – Mum’s this is secret men’s business, don’t even ask for an explanation!

In all seriousness, the cooperation of all and the spirit into which everyone entered into all the weekend activities was excellent. I hope the weekend was an enjoyable one and also beneficial for you all.

Deng Adut – Term 4 Books and Blokes

bb6From child soldier to refugee lawyer: Listen to Deng Thiak Adut’s inspiring journey

In conversation with biographer Ben McKelvey

When: Friday 28 October 2016

Where: Resources Centre

Time: 7.30am

RSVP:Click here

We are thrilled to announce Deng Thiak Adut and his biographer Ben McKelvey will be SJC’s Term 4 Books and Blokes speakers. We had the great privilege of meeting Mr Deng Adut last year when he visited Joeys and spoke to the boys at assembly. It was a remarkable speech and left all who were in attendance in awe of what he has overcome and how much he has achieved.

Deng’s incredible story has inspired millions of people around the world. The WSU YouTube clip, which features his story, has attracted more than two million views.

Deng came to Australia as a refugee at the age of 14, assisted by Marist Youth Care in Blacktown. After being taken away from his family when he was six-years-old, he lived as a child soldier in Sudan. He had never attended school, yet after arriving in Australia, Deng taught himself to read and write and put himself through law school.

Deng now works as a human rights lawyer and is committed to making a positive difference to the lives of others.  He devotes many hours of his personal time every week to activities such as mentoring, advising and supporting members of the community.

We are thrilled to welcome back Deng Adut to Joeys and hope you are able to join us.

Father son weekend information

Dear Parents and Carers,

Just a few updates regarding this weekend’s father/son camp.

  1. The weather forecast is quite good and the weekend will definitely go ahead. Luckily we’ve missed the flooding down south and the damaging winds in other parts of the state today.

A summary of the local forecast:

Friday Partly cloudy. Min 11°C Max 21°C (“feels like” temperatures 8°C to 18°C). 40% chance of 0 to 3 mm rain in the morning, clearing by about 1 pm. Average wind speed 9 to 17 km/hr.

Saturday Partly cloudy. Min 9°C Max 24°C (“feels like” temperatures 7°C to 20°C). 0% chance of rain. Average wind speed 6 to 13 km/hr.

Sunday Partly cloudy. Min 10°C Max 20°C (“feels like” temperatures 6°C to 16°C). 20% chance of 0 to 0.4 mm rain in the morning. Average wind speed 11 to 17 km/hr.

  1. Please take care on Upper Colo Road as you drive in. I’ve been advised that Newington cadets will be starting a camp on Saturday morning in the Colo Valley and 8 large coaches will be used to drop them off. You may be entering the valley as these coaches leave. Upper Colo Road is a narrow and windy country road with not a lot of room for a coach and car to pass one another, so it’s best if you’re driving slowly enough that you can pull stop right off to the side of the road.

  1. We’re still looking for a number of volunteers to assist throughout the weekend with cooking, cleaning up etc. Nothing too stressful. In keeping with the other activities this weekend we ask that fathers and sons do the activities together. To sign up with your son for a volunteer position, please go here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090F4AA8AF23ABF58-joeys
